Was thinking about the thermostat and radiator. Neither have been touched from new (hoses still have the snap off hose clamps).

Duncan - Vapour Lock was a thought due to the excessive temps we've been having at the moment, hence changing the filter, to no avail.

Otherthing is, I can feel a temperature difference between the top and bottom of the radiator, is this normal as it is crossflow? Appears to be no temp difference across the top (left to right) its bl**dy hot, but much cooler down the bottom.

Vapor lock happens if a fuel line is getting hot from being too close to ... say exhaust manifold

Radiator is cooler down the bottom as this is where the cooled water exits the radiator

However .... You are hinting at having the radiator rodded cleaned ... Can't hurt anything to do this

When a ford gets hot ... the gauge will tell ya ... All my fords let me know quick /smart on these issues

Q ... Does the motor have any oil leaks around the head area??

Yeah, thats what I was getting at. All the other fords I've had (EB, EL's & AU) have all let me know when there is a temp prob. Thats why it's so strange. The car is driven by mum so it never gets worked. Yes there is lots of oil between the Head and Block, I soooo don't want it to be a head gasket. Its not using any coolant at all. Like I said this car is in perfect nick.

I might just give it back to them for a week and see how it goes.

I think its about time I got a service manual. Its so hard to find info on these cars, other than performance mods.

I owned a 88 EA S pack 5spd for over 10 years .... Lovely car ... did all my own servicing
The 3.9 litre motor was notorious for head gaskets ... mine let go after the 200K mark

The sign was a leak of oil at the front, right at "where the head gasket met the block"

A test kit in the coolant will show up any exhaust gases

    Foot note on coolant ...
I had used 2 cans of castrol and added it with water for all it's life ... when I took the head off ... it was as brand new // so much so, that I marked it so the reconditioning place did not give me back some else's head ... all they had to do was just face it straight /// it was a perfect head /// Never been overheated in it's life

I've found that its a lot harder to get info on a common car than a Landrover. I also posted this on Aus Ford Forums.

The Problem: AU III Futura, When travelling up a long hill on a hot day (like 43degrees) the car begins to cut out, as if someone is turning the ignition on an off.

I have had fault codes read and came back with "ignition monitor self test out of range" so I have checked coil pack resistance, changed leads, and fuel filter, which had never been done (95,000kms), problem has happened again but only in extreme heat.

Could it be the cylinder de-activation in the ECU due to excessive heat??
I have also noticed the coolant comes out the overflow when engine off sometimes, but returns to normal level when started. Temp guage reads about the "O" on normal. Running my hand over the Radiator it seems to be cooler down the bottom even though it is a crossflow rad. Should I have it flushed?

Other than this the car runs smooth, and responsive, and you wouldn't know there was a problem??? I need to get this car fixed so I can stop driving it, and return it to my folks.

Any Advice appreciated? Apart from return it to the rubbish dump or any other Ford Jokes

had one in the shed the other day doing the same thing had me stumped it ended up being fuel pump on its way out could not keep up with the pressure on the hot days. Turning the motor of when hot it will spill out of rad into over/flow bottle and when rad cools down then it get drawn back in this is normal but depending on how much is coming out of the rad. grab a voltmeter and do some voltage drop test when hot or when its playing up just to check earth straps and the like
the only other thing to consider if it has and after market alarm set up on it, i have had a few in with badly fit up wirring that where not solderd up and slowly unraveling in wirring harness
    hope this gives some help

    Where is the ECU mounted?

Is it still in the passenger footwell, or is it one of the models where they placed it in the engine bay.

If it's in the engine bay, there could be your problem. The ECU gets hot and cuts out.

A local customer (who happes to be the boss of Tectaloy) went through several Falcons, ranging from Fairmonts to later model GT's and all would cut out and die in warm weather, or under load.

Some of our reps would have the same problem with base model Falcons. Returning them to Ford would produce no answers, nothing on the diagnostics, everything would show up as ok.

Half an hour from the dealer, she'd cut out again, often in the middle of an intersection.

Those in the know, apparently carry a bottle of water. When the car dies, pop the bonnet and pour the water over the ECU. Hey Presto! the car starts again and off you go.

Haven't heard if there's a proper workaround yet.

Could be a Spark Plug or two breaking down in the heat, try a set of new plugs and see what happens, cheap and easy, if that's the problem, Regards Frank.
