This CD is a good start.

Dave's Interesting Things - RAVE II

Not only do you get a complete workshop manual on CD so that you can print out the relevant pages each time you have a job to do, but I think sales support the running of this forum.

    1973 Series III LWB 1983 - 2006
    1998 300 Tdi Defender Trayback 2006 - often fitted with a Trayon slide-on camper.

    Thanks
Purt, where are you in this fine state? I can help if you want to call me on 0408 995 635 (BH)

    Hi JC

1st noisy, 2nd noisy, 3rd noisy and 5th noisy but not as noticeable.
At least 4th is still noise free.

    Not so cheery, Arthur

Hi Arthur, is this Graemes 130? I'd say it is a layshaft front bearing more than 5th bearings

I have just had mine apart due to a broken layshaft and have put a few pics up on this thread of mine, from post 144 onwards - May give you an idea of what its like inside. Read all the way to the end. There are quite a lot of pics, but they are a bit spread out.

    Thanks JC

Will make an effort to get a motor for 'Fred' going first ( Blue disco brought from Fred )
Then do up the original box for the Defender and refit, it probably only needs the centre diff thrust washers tidying up.

Will be then pulling the Graeme box down to check that out.

    Cheers Arthur

    Ok, brace yourself ............

What else should I be replacing while I have the extension housing pulled out? Is there someplace I can pre order the parts from, to minimise downtime? Or are the bearing/s common enough to source from a roller bearings outlet?

    Thanks

    Purt.

    Wink R380 5th gear

Hi this is fairly typical of an R380 even the later 'L' boxes, this brg is obviously stressed so do not be tempted to replace with a cheap alternative, DO NOT remove the oil pump from the housing, if you take out the wrong screws and end up with the back plate off it is virtually impossible to replace without a new gasket and LR don't supply these. Yes we do supply but better you don't need one. Ian Ashcroft
