TD5 Injector and ECU Wiring Looms

I have a '02 MY TD5 Def110 (since new) and have the oil in harness issue (no surprises there I spose). It isn't causing issues at present even though the oil has made it to the ECU, but I guess it is a matter of time before it does.

I have been reading many threads within this forum on the "TD5 oil in harness issue" and as yet have not found out whether the replacement injector harness which, from all accounts has been modified by LR, has actually stopped the oil ingress. If the LR replacement hasn't been successful, has anyone found a a non OEM replacement that has worked.

Any advice as I am about to purchase a new injector harness and ECU harness.

    Cheers

TD5 Injector and ECU Wiring Looms

I've got a D2 Td5, was in same position as you, saw the oil in the loom, ecu etc etc, but it didn't just stop working, it was rather a gradually imperceptable drop off in performance until one day towing a horse float I couldn't keep up with slow traffic. Changed the loom and presto, big return in power and torque and fuel economy. Then you want more, so did an ECU upgrade too. Highly recommended. My advice, don't put if off.

No issues replacing the harnesses but just wanting to know have LR actually fixed the problem with the replacement part being modified so it doesnt return or has someone else made better replacement. Did you swap both injector & ECU or just injector and let the ECU harness clear itself over time (or with some cleaning)?

    Cheers

LR indicated the new style harness stops the problem. However I am not sure that this is the case as there is very little difference. The main problem is that the o rings in the plugs wear and allow oil to progress into the main harness. This can be flushed.
Looking at my old one it cleaned up quite nice and I believe with new o rings would be useable again.
The issue generally seems to occur after 5-6 years or 100,000 kms plus so it may be some time before we know if it is a permanent solution or not.
I have had my replacement in around 3 years now and no dramas so far. Have not had any oil reach the plug on the head yet as I check this regularly.

    Thanx CraigE

I will put the injector harness in but I don't want to spend money on the ECU harness if I can avoid it. Did you do both looms or did the ECU harness clear up without further oil coming through from the injectors? Like I have already said, I'm not having misfires or power loss (that I can pick) or other probs except that there was fair bit of oil at the ECU.

    JLo,
You do not need to replace the main harness, this is a big job and rather costly. Some dealers / technicians will tell you you need to but that is rubbish.
Basically you will need to flush the harness through to the ecu plug, the oil can not get into the ecu itself as it is sealed. There are many posts on it so do a search. But basically you need to set up an old coke bottle or something similar and tape seal it to the socket main harness side, disconnect the plug at the ecu and place a tray under. Put in 200-300mls of metho or non plastic destructive contact cleaner and let it drain through over night. You can also put a valve or something in one end of the coke bottle and apply very low air pressure to push it through. If you are not using air pressure make sure there is a hole in the bottle or cut it to a funnel shape to allow atmospheric pressure to let it drain through.
The metho or contact cleaner residual will dry, but check and mop up any residue in the ecu switch for the next week or so. The metho or contact cleaner is non conductive so should not cause and issue.

    Thanx CraigE & Scarry

Good to hear I don't have to change ECU harness.

I have read the "how to's" so I am glad to hear that it is a longer term fix.

    On to the next challenge....

    Thanks again

    Cheers

    Just got mine replaced

    Hi
I have just got my harness replaced last Thursday from MR over at Redcliffe, it cost $120 for the new harness and they assured me it will never happen again as it has a new seal that won't let the oil down to the Ecu as well they put silicon on it as well when they put it in, my 130 has just done 130,000 ks, I also had to have to exhaust manafold replaced the old one was warped, its a comon thing with them , so go for the new harness...

    Thanks Ashley

Its big vote of confidence in the part when your mechanic says it wont ever happen again but he'll add a bit of silicon just to be sure! Where'd he put it?

Well I drained the diffs today and the front ran out black! But thats another post. I want my 200TDi back!

Going by the the replies above I think I can be as confident as any LR owner can be that the new harness is fixed.

    Cheers and thanks

    JLo
