I think you need to come and eyeball my junk pile, I may just have an engine that would happily drive that.
just kicking an idea around with an ex employer......
4.5-5kva, and he's quoting a 3000 RPM operating speed for the generator

theres a reason it's being driven by a LR engine with a PTO somwhere between the engine and the generator...... he's a lil sick of carting portable gensets around, and a vehicle mounted setup appeals to him
ahh.

just to make sure ive got this right
with a diesel, if i dial up 3000rpm on the hand throttle with the PTO engaged but not under load, when the PTO comes under load, the governor will keep it at 3000rpm?
providing the engine is in good order and making the power required at those RPMs.
yep.

This is probably a very ignorant question, but I dont understand why this isnt done more often??
Im trying to research it at the moment and there is next to no information on it..
Surely lots of people with there land rover set up for camping would want this instead of carting a separate generator around?
Is it too heavy, costly or too hard to fit?
Seems like a good way to use an otherwise waisted feature..
Cheers

To put it explicitly, which nobody seems to have actually said:-
Series landrover diesels do not have a control that changes engine power. The "throttle" is actually a control that adjusts the engine governed speed using the governor built into the CAV injection pump.
This means that for a fixed position of the accelerator pedal or hand "throttle", the engine speed will remain constant regardless of load, within limits set by the maximum power available at that setting, and the response time of the governor.
There is no good reason why a power alternator could not be run on a Series Landrover PTO, but there are a number of possible problems and limitations to consider.
1. PTOs are rare and expensive.
2. If the power drain is going to be very low for more than a few minutes, then remember that like most diesels, the engine will not take kindly to this sort of use, and you can expect cylinder wall glazing and an early overhaul.
3. If PTO stationary use exceeds about 25% of rated power, then the engine will require a military fan and an oil cooler. Both are rare and expensive.
Petrol engines required an external governor, and these exist. Much the same problems apply to the petrol engine.
