OK, I've ground out the webbing on my (TD5) manifold. Not that hard with the 4' angle grinder and then a carbide burr on a die grinder?
I'm just wondering given the "de-webbing" is it necessary/recommended to increase the stud size. And if so are the 300 TDI studs recommended? Would someone mind telling me the drill size for enlarging the holes in the manifold?
Having done this I'd like to paint the manifold can anyone recommend a suitable paint and is their any special process required to clean the surface before applying the paint.
I’ve considered thermal coatings however I’m told to be effective I need to do the manifold, dump pipe, turbo and front pipe (exhaust pipe). The cost I was quoted was $500 just for the manifold?
Thanks in advance

im about to do exactly the same things........
you also need to machine the manifold flat again........
use 300tdi manifold studs.......and drill the holes on the manifold out to 10mm......except for the the two holes on the middle port.....
leave these as they are to locate the manifold in the correct position......
this is the info i got in my quest this weekend........
i just went and brought lurch home.....so i can remove the manifold tomorrow after work......
im also planning on painting the manifold with some UHT exhaust paint.....
just clean off as much of the rust and scale as possible with a wire buff or brush......
unless you have access to a bead blaster........
Defenderzonk,
Thanks.
I'm going to get the mechanic to do the drill and tap on the head. What I'm going to do is take the Def in with the maniflold all set to bolt on including the thermo probe tapped in the middle. Right where that little flat spot is.
Milling hopefully will not cost an arm & leg.
im still after a bit more info on this........as to whether 300 tdi studs are thicker......
have a look at this thread........

Hope you checked it for straightness and had it ground flat if it was out.
Cheers
Rather than duplicate threads I'm tagging onto another thread which is covering the same thing and in the Sydney area so please post there link
advice needed......lurch has a headache.....
When i did my manifold i didnt worry about replacing the studs with Tdi studs ,Removed webbing drilled all holes out to 10mm bar the centre 23 months down the track still all good
The one thing i did notice when i did my manifold was 8 out of the 10 manifold studs were loose![]()
