Well it did on mine, I have a 4L motor with a 3.5 timing cover, I just used the appropriate size socket (around 25mm IIRC) an extension and a breaker bar, have you got a workshop manual, it may show the nipple as removable, I would imagine it would be the same as the V-belt timing cover, it is a steel nipple screwed into the cover so it should come out.
STOP PRESS, just went out and had a look at mine and it has a spacer block with the 2 oil cooler lines (to the radiator) attached where the original filter goes, I remember when I removed the nipple the block was only supported by the oil cooler lines. The threaded part that the filter screws to in a 3.5 I have outside as well doesn't have this extra block (no oil lines) and the threaded part doesn't look like it is removable and this tallies with the L/R W/shop manual, have a look at yours and see what setup you have, The nipple in mine is about 19mm of thread (one end), then a hex head (middle) and about 19mm of thread on the other end, another thing if not using L/R filter check inside of threaded part of oil filter and see if there is anything that may cause the filter to bottom out on the thread before it seals properly, if there is a plate under the thread hole it may have gouge/scratch marks if it is touching this plate, bit hard to put in words but you'll get the drift, Regards Frank.

My timing cover is different to yours, the later serpentine belt ones have oil cooler pipes coming from them and the filter sits forward, so Z9s cannot be used so the smaller Z89 is used instead. I see where you are coming from.
I'll have a look at my Rave.

Next time you have the filter off check and see if the nipple has a six sided hex nut at the base of the thread, if so it will unscrew, I use a Z9 type filter and it faces forward too, but I have a large AVM bash plate to protect it, I found that the Z89 fitted AOK with no leaks, but when I changed over to Z9 I had leaks because of previous problem stated, let us know how you get on, Regards Frank.

Frank there was a reason why the Z89 is specified not the Z9..... it's the risk of snapping the longer Z9 off under articulation and loosing all your oil.
There is a thread somewhere about this.
I'll will be a while before I do my next oil change. Laid up after an operation

Having a good look at the Rave Cd, I notice there is a bolt hole just above the filter top lip.I presume oil could escape past this bolt? Could be that oil is seeping from there and running down the filter, only other possibility is the is the screw fitting needs looking into.

    Did you find your answer?
i like you am replacing a timing cover due to overtightening the oil cooler pipe.

when i went to get all the gaskets i was told to also buy an o-ring (which is not a land rover supplied part) that fits into the hole just above the top oil cooler pipe, that is the oil cooler pipe sitting above the oil filter.

this would explain a leak on the oil filter.

    Hi Trobbo and Jezz.

This will be the cause. It will be the O ring you refer to Trobbo.

Mine is still nice and clean now.

I always use Z9 filters on my Disco1. Never had a problem and mine is quite scarred in that region from hitting rocks etc. Maybe I'm just lucky.
The filter has never had any damage marks on it.

Thanks Utemad, i had a look at mine last night and it is very dirty in that area , i will clean it up and see if i can spot it coming from there after i take it for a drive. I could have sworn it was coming from the filter, but i think it will be the O.P.R.Valve.
