Question LT95 noisy in top gear.Is she buggered?

    G'day all,
the Rangie's gearbox has a very pronounced whine in top gear. It's more noticeable now that I've got the Aircon fixed.(less windnoise)
I've been searching through this forum, and found a reference or two,but only in passing, not specifically telling what the problem is.

At first I thought it was just rover transfer whine, but driving home last night from work I had an empty stubbie resting against the gearstick on the highway, and the noise and slight rumbling vibration were greatly amplified. That's also when I noticed it was only happening to any great extent,in top gear.

Can this be fixed in situ possibly?Or is it box out, full rebuild job?
    Am using 20/50w oils,recently changed.
    Thanks,Andrew.

    if its only in top....

your bearings in the main box are the likely culprit

I always find that LT95s have a bit of a transfer whine but nothing really pronounced,
its hard for people to diagnose noises when they cant hear them.
If its only noticeable because you have wound the windows up then its probably been like it for years and will probably be
like it for years to come.

Has it got worse or can you just hear it now??
If its the main gearbox then its a box out job

no points for guessing which bearing is westy in a gearbox, you suspect one you change them all.

with no further information, if pressed to guess.

Id go the layshaft bearing on the input side.

Thanks Dave,I guess I'll put up with it for the time being, and if it gets any worse then pull her out.
The fact the old girl was used as a shunt vehicle in a wreckers yard might have something to do with it ay?
Best to abide by the LR motto,"if it ain't actually stopping your forward momentum, don't fix it".
    Thanks again,Andrew.

if you have to use an amp to make the rattle really noticable your not dead yet. 4th gear whine is as already mentioned most likely tcase related and the rattle will be getting amped by the selector already.

being used as a shunter wont hurt the 95.

the rattle is indicative of something starting to go but shes got a long way to go yet.

I didn't realise 4th gear whine was most likely transfer case wear.In that case, since the oil pump is inthe front section of the gearbox, and they run a seperate oil cavity, can I fill up the transfer with 90/140 or similiar and see if the whine eases up a bit?
The transfer leaks a fair bit,I replaced the rear seal recently bit no different,it actually looks like it coming from the rear casing gasket, but seems a lot of oil for a weeping gasket.
The seal I replaced was a CBC job,and was slightly narrower (1 mil) than the original, and the output flange did seem to go in very easy. It's hard to tell exactly because the oil drain plate sends the oil out near the casing, not into the handbrake drum.
So maybe I need to go get another correct seal, and what do think about the 90/140 idea?
    Thanks again,Andrew.

Beware of running 90/140 it could potentially have additives that will damage the bronze thrust washers this is not good.

I had a similar problem in my county, it went away when i had new unis installed in the rear tailshaft shaft, and got it balanced.
