    D2 TD5 Common Problems

    Gday all.

I'm a LR D2 TD5 enthusiast (its a love affair - not a 1 night stand). As an engineer I like to know it all. So I would like to know from the brains trust what are the 'common problems/defects' of a D2 TD5 Auto, as the vehicle ages.

I have a 2001 D2 TD5 (had it since 10,000km) and its now done 140,000km. The problems I have encountered are as follows:
    1. Rear axle oil seal replaced @25,000km (under warranty)
    2. Water pump leak - replaced at 30,000km (under warranty)
    3. Injector wiring harness replaced at approx 85,000km (symptom was sporadic rough engine run).Everyone has probably experienced this one.
    4. Leaky steering box at 120,000km- overhauled in Canberra - but still leaks!!
    5. Radiator leak - replaced at 120,000km
    6. replaced water in fuel sensor at 140,000 (plastic thread stripped!)

Thats probably about it. I've been relatively lucky (I've probably just blown my luck by saying that!!!)
I generally dont trust LR dealers or most mechanics (except Mitchell, Canberra), so I generally do my own maintenance, i.e. change my engine oil and filters every 6 months, brakes and auto service done by the experts (?).

So what are the problems that I can expect >140,000kms???
My good mechanic in Mitchell in Canberra told me that the TD5 is pretty good and dont have too much trouble, BUT, I have read many other problems on the web, such as Fuel Pressure Regulator leaks, fuel pump failures, ECU dramas, Water in Fuel sensors......O2 sensors.....
I'd like to get a defect list together to promulgate on this website, i.e. when common problems are likely to occur for the D2 TD5, so I (we) can be proactive and replace parts before they fail on the highway.

    Hope you can help....

Fuel pressure regulator, idler pulley, harmonic balancer, oil pump bolt, front prop shaft, abs sensors, disc brake dust shields cracking, rear door sticking (if lock not lubricated), studs on the manifold, head (if overheated), abs shuttle valve (if not exercised enough), turbo hose delamination, faulty boost modulators and MAF sensor...to name a few....

But thats if you use it for what its meant for!

as above post but I think we tend to be honest about the faults we come across but most can be repaired cheaper than what the dealers can do it for, did my ABS modulator again $30 for brake fluid plus 4 hours of my labour and mine has been abused off road have the dents to show.

I blew a head gasket on the way to Alice Springs doing a 140 in a head wind with a roof top tent probably didn't help but still went from Ayres Rock to Kal and Perth back to Brisbane no problems just had to top up the water every morning and not put the pedal to the metal.

Come across two Toyotas with over heating problems on same trip one was blowing water out of the exhaust the other was siezed and one new V8 toyota that the oil light was coming on this was north of Normanton,
they told me they rang the dealer who said she will be right to keep driving and the owners wanted this put in writing and sent via fax which I thought was fair enough.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Problems? Very Little since I have know my 2000 D2 TD5.
Father in law owned it before me. 2Nd owner from 60000.
    He had no preblems.
    I bought it at 105000K's.
110K Clutch, about 140k front brakes, about 160k airbags, replaced with springs(2" lift) Did the front 2" lift at 170K.
180k, Ignition key did not return to run(did not know it) and drove 40Km's at 100Km/h with starter engaged. ie 2nd Hand starter + repaired ignition.
190k, fly wheel was worn + new clutch again(OEM parts this time)
    205K, rear brakes(OEM again)
213k, Turbo is nearing lifes end.
My D2 has seen some serious overland travels. The biggest was a 5000Km trip through Kagladi(Botswana) and van Zyls Pass(Namibia).
A photo of it was featured in the local SA4X4 magazine going down van Zyls pass. The article was about the whole trip.
