    3.5L rebuild advice

    Hi,

Got the heads off, it has broken ring/s and small chunk out of piston in 1 with some scoring in the bore, obvious head gasket blow-by between 2 & 4, 6 & 8 and possible between 5 & 7. very slight smooth lip in bores. Everything else inc. cam looks real good for age. (101FC, 1977, 68K miles)

I have read you can only bore these motors once, any feedback appreciated.

Is it true you should replace the head-bolts every time they heads are pulled off?

    Thanks,

    Peter

I've read that the poms are happy taking 20thou of the liners without encouranging liner movement.
Also I understand you can use the head bolts several times (nominally 5x) if they not the stretch type (after an inspection of course). I think the stretch type were used on the 3.9's with composite heat gaskets, I'm not aware of them being used on the 3.5's. I think you can tell the difference by the washer arrangement - stretch bolts have an integral hex head and washer, non stretch have seperate washer.

101 head bolts can be reused.
If you are going to pull the motor out for a rebore.........then yes it would be a good time to think about a 3.9 conversion or another one of the bigger rover V 8s

The liners are replaceable. If the scoring is bad might be worth considering and pricing up.

Just make sure you get such work done by someone who genuinely knows what they are doing. If they are good you might want them to machine a lip so they will never move in the block.

Just thinking I have two good striped down 3.5s here. May be able to find you a block with good bores Where are you? I don't need them any more so are available for spares if you want one.

    Ron,

What advantages would a 3.9 give me in this vehicle?

There isnt a huge difference between a good 3.5 and a bad 3.9
in fact a good 3.5 will make a bad 3.9 look average,
Remember few 3.5s today are in really good condition most are over 20 years old and have degraded performance.
I think a good 3.9 tuned properly would give you additional torque that would be appreciated.
But If you get a really good 3.5 you will not be dissapointed

    G`day Peter

I know your not asking but ,

At 68 thousand miles it shouldn`t be showing any lip unless possibly the air cleaning isn`t too good , ect .

Broken rings are more than likely heat associated so i`d suggest you have the radiator rodded for certain and carefully check all the rest of the cooling system as well as the ignition system specially if the piece out of the piston looks ignition associated .

Reason being if you fit or fix and don`t find the cause it will happen again .

    Cheers
