    fairy o'drive S2a to S3 dont fit!

swapping a 2a ex mil overdrive into a series three transfer...

the S3 intermediate gear is smaller than the 2a's?????

are these overdrives different or are the transfers geared differently between models?

Neither. The input gear is identical on Series 1-2-3 expressly so that accessories such as the overdrive did not require changing. The only exceptions are :-

    1. The Series 3 is a Stage 1

    2. Either vehicle is fitted with the optional constant mesh transfer case, standard on the One Ton (none in Australia) and the forward control.

    3. Either vehicle is fitted with high ratio transfer gears (and I am not certain about that one)

The transfer case ratios do change through Series 1-2-2a production, but this does not affect the gear that meshes with the overdrive, which remains the same, although the low range straight cut gear on the same lump of metal is different.

Have you tried to fit it?.A tip,on the shaft you will have a washer or two under the castlelated nut, make sure they are fitted right or they will hang out covering the splines on one side and the O/D won't slide home. Pat

i dont have th nut on atm

i have slid it in no probs, but the gear on the o'drive is 10mm away from the intermediate gear.

slide it back into the transfer it came from and all is good?

i will count the teeth on both gears tomorrow

the two intermediate gears(the crosscut ones) appear to be different sizes

the straight cut gears appear to be the same size.

Count the teeth on the gear you took off and compare to the overdrive count, although obviously they must be different assuming the gear you took off was in mesh.

It begins to sound to me as if the S3 may have been converted to high range gears - I can't think of anything else.

Note that there is nothing to stop you swapping transfer cases complete between S2a and S3.
