It got worse today. Just a bit louder

Much more noticeable just before the turbo comes in, and especially on engine braking

A length of rubber hose soon detected that the front drivers side port was leaking. I pulled the gasket out and the asbestos coating was blown away on one side of the gasket causing blow by.

[ You say the gaskets were replaced, may be they were fitted back to front and were not fitted correctly to match the port? this is a sure fire way for them to fail quickly]
If they were replaced recently I doubt the coating was asbestos

Sounds a manifold leak, very hard to tell without hearing it

    Well ...

Just been having a look under the Landy. I noticed there has been evidence of an oil leak on the front diff. I thought nothing of it because when I changed the oil not that long ago I managed to cover that section in oil

Just had a look at the engine oil and it's on low. Had a closer look at the oil return pipe that runs from the cooler to the oil filter, and it appears to be leaking

So I'm up for a new one of those I guess

Funny the things you find while your looking for something else.

I'll order a new exhaust/inlet gasket the same time I get the hose

Would low oil cause the tick?

    Thanks

That's fine, the low level is just that, the lowest SAFE operating level, nothing to stress about................you probably should check you rover out more often but

Yeh I know I usually do but I've been caught out a couple of times not letting oil the oil settle then topping it up and finding it over full.

Upon saying that, it's been sitting for the past hour or so. So must be low this time

I was just talking to a fella and he suggested it could be the fanbelt.

This could very well be the case, as on the Monday after the trip I could here it slipping and carrying on.

I was told to take it off, run the motor, then put it back on and see if there is a difference

    Is this ok to do?

Running the motor without the fanbelt?

Yep, just for a short time as you wont have the water pump turning, alternator turning, etc.
