scream coming from car when on boost

    Guys

since the defender 90 has been back together and we have been chasing electrical issues....Ian had some smoke coming into the cab...

he chased it down to being the down pipe on the exhaust not being sealed well he has since sealed it up all smoke has stopped but when being driven and the car gets on boost the turbo starts to whistle and while whistling there is like a funny screaming noise coming from the car also......

    what could it be?

it only happens on boost we have had a look over the pipes to make sure nothing is split....we checked to make sure that the air in take pipe for the snorkel hadn't come off...

I think its the turbo but Ian is not convinced

    Thoughts?

    Some history on the car

Car blew head gasket....fixed..on start up ran away due to cleaner in the intercooler. stopped in time before engine blew up
then found firewall rotten......changed out for county one
recently had problems with electrics, headlights etc...fixed apart from left hand indicators now not working chasing an earth.

I know this DB I really do

A fella I went 4WDing with about a month ago had the same thing on his 300 Tdi.

But I can't remember what he said it was

I think maybe a gasket or bearing

    Sorry

Maybe an exhaust gasket or similar
I'm pretty shore there is an exhaust gasket where the exhaust manifold joins the turbo, this is on a 200tdi disco not shore if they are the same on a defer
Anyway there is a slight leak in this join on our disco which causes a slight hiss.

yeah there is no hissing from what we can hear......pretty sure the manifold was put on with gasket paste but would have to check that as I can't remember.

I told him also to check the manifold studs.....

If it sounds like the mother of all belts slipping at about 3000RPM when under power then I'd be betting on a leaking exhaust gasket.

Could be heaps of things, as others have said, most likely a leak somewhere, could be a boost leak or exhaust leak, but its also a chance its the turbo - it could be the bearings complaining when its on boost.... lets hope its something simple

Scream coming from car when on boost.

I thought that only happened when you replaced the turbo with something bigger and better.

Bearing noise - Very unlikely. If this happens the oil should already be comming out the exhaust pipe.

The best bet is the exhaust leak. Very little but makes quite a screeching noise.

Turbo diesels pumps out huge volumes of exhaust gas and with the small turbos being used also has quite a high back pressure and this brings out any problem areas or warped faces.
As also mentioned in this thread. If sealant was used, this could also be a problem.

My D2 has been screeching for the past 50000Km's and I have yet to find the problem area. It did became less after fitting BAS silicon hoses.
