    i just sold a 300tdi ZF for $1200

    There is a Mechanic in Skipton that has a 300tdi Auto and transfer for sale CHEAP

    yes it definitely can be done, in the RAVE cd there is a diagram for building a transmission jack adapter out of 6mm steel plate, i will try and get a pic of mine for you, i just changed it around so it could be used with a trolley jack, makes it much easier to manoeuvre the box around getting it in and out

    i converted my disco to manual when my auto died, wish i had kept the auto, but funds didnt allow that at the time

    i did the whole lot with some jack stands, 2 trolley jacks, the adapter, and i used my hi-lift jack to spread the chassis, it is simpler than it sounds at first

    Hi Jazza,
    You're in Ballarat aren't you? Any chance I could borrow that adapter if you've still got it?
    I've had a look at the picture in RAVE and its not too much of a drama to make, but would save me some stuffing round if I could borrow one.

    I've pretty much decided just to get the converter fixed and do the removal/refit myself. I found a place in Thomastown that will reco mine for $220 so reckon I'll give it a go. I don't have a hi-lift to spread the chassis, but I'm sure I'll figure something out for that.

    Redrover3 - Thanks Tony, good to know others have done it successfully with minimal equipment. My trans seems fine apart from the converter lockup, so I reckon its worth a go. If I can do it myself I'd rather put the $$$ towards a 3rd gear lockup mod than paying someone to remove/refit.

    Cut a Left over 90 x 90mm block of pine & cut up 2 slim pine wedges ... Jamb block with 2x wedges between chassis and hit wedges with a gympy ...

    Spreads my chassis every time ...

    Finally got a chance to start pulling the trans out this week.
    Almost there - but having trouble getting the last couple of bolts at the top of the bellhousing.

    Any tips from the experienced?
    Is it best to use a spanner from inside the engine bay, or socket and long extension from underneath.
    Does it help to drop the rear of the trans down a bit, or better to keep it up high?

    i found it easiest to tackle once i had the transmission lowered a touch, and i used 3 or 4 extension bars on my ratchet to undo them,

    Thanks Jazza. I finally got them all undone - what a PITA!!
    Think I really needed another couple of 12" extensions so I could just stay back by the rear axle and pretend I had a shotgun
    Not looking forward to putting it back together.

    Hopefully tonight I'll get it out of the car without dropping it either on myself or the floor.

    have you got all the bolts out of the TC yet?

    I get to the top bell housing bolts one of 3 ways.

    if the underside of the vehicle is easy to get under and clean I use a wobble drive on a socket and an air ratchet.

    IF its a filthy mess I send the owner under with instructions.

    If the owners not available I do it from the top with a ratcheting ring open end spanner.


    put a couple of long bolts in the bottom of the bell housing and slide it back about half an inch or so. then from the top secure a rope through the top bell housing bolt holes. have an off sider standing by to hold the weight of the front end of the box while your under it. IF you have a second off sider then lace a rope over the chassis rails and under hand brake.

    assuming you dont have a proper transmission jack you can do it with just a trolly jack and a single off sider but I find 3 is better and safer.
