    Getting a rebuilt R380

I'm after a rebuilt R380 - later suffix as per the info on the ashcroft site.

Who are the best people doing them at the moment? I'm around Sydney, but would even consider sourcing O/S if the exchange is favorable.

Can you get additions like tapered roller bearings for them? It's going behind an Isuzu, so every bit counts. My other option is an Isuzu box, but I'd like to stay with constant 4x4. Not really thinking too much about an LT95 as I'd like to have the overdrive for highway driving - and it has been said that the later R380 is stronger in any case.

    Cheers!

Check with Awards in Seven Hills. Terry normally rebuilds your own gearbox but he may have a complete unit for sale.

    R380

Give Peter & Christina from Range Parts a call on 02 9896 2355. Peter can rebuild yours or supply an exchange. Tell him Justin from Tweed sent you.

By the way he built mine which has been behind my Isuzu for 5 years now.

Make sure you're comparing apples and apples.

What specific things should I be looking for? I've been making sure all the bearings and syncro's have been replaced, and all the gears checked and OK.

Is there anything else I should be asking?

Reconditioned boxes have been rebuilt with some new bits and some old bits.

It is a risk. They do come with a 12 month warranty, but if anything goes wrong in that 12 months, and the box needs to come out, you pay for labour to remove box from car and refit.

I have no idea what exactly was replaced in my recondition box. I do know that I have some brand new gears and some old gears in the reconditioned transfer case and this has caused some whining which I am told will go away with time as the gears "mesh" with each other.

I guess the only thing is to make sure you have a warranty. That is a good start and try to get a list of what was replaced in the reconditioned box.

    Good luck

    Cheers

I've just checked. LR have a new R380 (suffix L) for the 300tdi D1 with a list price of $2151.
    Defender ones are around $7000+.
