    Is this normal?

    Hi all,
My 97 tdi disco has started ideling quite rough well sounding rough. A rattely, clacking almost cherping noise. Rang our local landy guy and he said it would most likley be belts slipping, he is having a lot of trouble with the brand of belt he is using apparently (just replaced some on mine). Anyway it only did this on start up and then went away after a short drive so it wasn't to bad.

Today that slight sound turned into a loud belt squeal that does not stop and can be heard over the engine quite easily. It doesn't seem to be ideling super smooth either.

I had a look at the belts as this was happening and noticed there were some large (I think) vibrations going through some of the belt wheels and the belt tensioner at the top is moving up and down 10-20mm quite quickly whilst the belt moves around. Is this movement normal? It seems to look at very rough but mabey they are like that? This is my first landy, my old man is a diesel mech and he recons it looks rough, almost like timing is out but he to like me has little experince with these engines.

    Any help will be appriciated.

    Thanks Andrew

Search 'serpentine' and you'll find rather a lot of threads on the same thing.

Like sagging suspension springs, the tensioner does lose it's tension. Part no ERR4708 or Dayco number APV 1004. Around $150 ish.

Check to see if the ancillaries are ok at the same time, as if they play up, it can also affect the serpentine belt in the same way.

    serpentine belt tensioner

Just had the tensioner replaced on my discovery , also was jumping 10 to 20 mils but didnt seem loose or worn . Did 300ks of tracks and 4wd on the weekend and got home to find the belt had shredded to fifty percent of its width although all pulleys and tensioner looked fine . Had the mechanic fit a new belt and he found that the bolt that holds the tensioner was stripped out of the block causing alignment to fluctuate and allowing the jump . drilled out and fitted heli coil and no more jump or belt squeal . motor is much happier so may be worth a look on yours ?

Only the bolt that holds the actual pulley on is LH thread, the main tensioner retainer is held on by a stud and nut.

    Problem solved

Went out and saw Tim Vinson at Land rovers only today, as he had only just recently installed the belt. Changed to a dayco belt and stoped the noise. Pulled the pully tensioner off to have a look but all seemed fine. Hopefully that is that.
