    motor drven air compressor

I'm thinking of setting up an engine driven air compressor on a stage1 v8 I have searched the forums and I have checked out some of the setups I am curious if there are any new setups or if people have upgraded or modified their original setups eg pros and cons of particular compressors or layouts.Any photos or info would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance Pete

replace the standard aircon compressor with a york reciprocator.

it will need a couple of mods (namely drilling and tapping a drain plug) depending on the type you get and may need the clutch/pully assembley replacing.

Mine worked real well on the cape trip but mines driven off of a startermotor.

have a look in the members rides section for discowhites D1 ute.
i built mine from a sanden ac compressor, ive had a 7cfm york in a past D1 but find the sanden just as good but alot smaller and easier to fit especially if you want to keep your ac system

    40l tank to 140psi in 90 sec...nice

I use the York, mounted on the engine in the 1985 Range Rover engine layout. imho the York is better because it is self lubricating, only requiring an oil top up occasionally. This can be modified so it never needs touching by blocking off a small oil gallery. The York will survive long term use as an air compressor, unlike rotary's unless they have been modded to cope. You may not have the room on a stage 1 though, so the choice then is to use the low mount option ala early Rangies. I've never seen a low mount with a York only Rotary compressors like the Sanden (doesn't mean you cant make one)
Here is an earlier incantation of mine
Now it's all being converted to Poly groove so I can run Serpentine

because they dont have a dedicated oil reserve and rely on the lubrication that gets pumped through the system to lubircate the top end of the compressor. The york reciprocating type work on exactly the same principal as an engine with the rings being splash lubricated from the bottom and the reed valves get enough lube from the over spill.

The little amount of overspill that you get is also good for your air tools but means your compressor cant be used to drive sprayguns without fitting a reciever drier of some sorts.

the overspill can be further limited by blocking off the splash port thats in the intake side of the compressor.

If you want to run a sanden, scroll, swash plate or any other of the compressors that arent the reciprocators (regardless of manufacturer) you need to put an oiler in in front of the compressor and usually some kind of reciever drier after. Advanced setups can use an auto drain valve in a wet tank after the compressor to recycle the oil and clean up the output air.

or you stop the transfer of oil from behind the pistons by blocking the 2 galleries there are, thus creating a sump like the york, and feed the inlet to the comp from the tappet cover to feed oily air to the top end of the compressor... to me its the same as the york??

    urmmm..

so youve had to modify the compressor to stop it pumping out all its oil And youve had to add an oily air source?

whereas with a york reciprocator you can just bolt it up, plumb the airlines and forget about it other than checking the oil every now and then (which you have to do on the others anyway)

    to me thats the same?
