Post Defender 300 Tdi Intercooler, which one.

Hi all, I've been reading all the posts about intercoolers. I have a 1999 Tdi Defender with 240,000 kms. on it, always serviced and in good mechanical nick.
I am about to acquire a 1240 k.g. camper van that we will be using for holidays, weekends etc; not full time. I was wondering if I should get an upgraded intercooler or is this not enough extra weight to worry about?
If an upgrade is recommended which intercooler(s) is everyone using & how much are they? Also seems that silicone hoses are recommended, again where are they sourced & how much? What does an upgraded intercooler do to the fuel consumption?
Alisport seem popular but how long do they take to get over here (NSW). Can they be fitted by any mechanic, what other adjustments need to be made.
I know this is pretty exhaustive but I may as well ask all the questions in one go.
    Thanks heaps

Stuff from UK gets here in approx 7-10 days or better.

If you go a bigger IC then you will most likely have to increase the fueling from your pump to make use of any extra air, an increase in the wastegate pressure will also be required to use the extra cooling capacity.

You don't get anything for nothing and if you use the extra power you can expect to pay for it in your fuel. However I think most have been happy that the increase in performance for a very small loss in fuel economy.

I would tow your van with the car as is then you might appreciate the improvements from your mods ortherwise they migfht go unnoticed.

i had my 300tdi'd fuel pump tweaked......made towing the caravan a lot better although still a little slow on the hills

if you tweak the fuel pump i would suggest an EGT gauge so you can keep an eye on temps

    hello
i would agree with the tweaking of the pump a tad considering most landys are de-rated from the factory if you are prepared to pay a fair bit more say around the $2500 mark (dont quote me on that) and get a good gas system put on it will give you noticable power/torque increase and also at the same time give you BETTER fuel economy otherwise just do lots of minor things to get the landy up and singing
    cheers!

    G'day,
I have the full Allisport kit including intercooler, radiator and variable nozzle turbo (all imported and fitted by previous owner). See this thread for pics >>>> http://www.aulro.com/afvb/isuzu-land...urbo-info.html The performance is quite impressive. The other day I towed a trailer with 1m3 of rock dust on board with no problem, although I was doing the right thing by the R380 and sitting on 80kph in 4th gear even though it would pull it in 5th.
The temp gauge sits in the same position all the time, even on a 40* day.

    Cheers, Murray

Thanks for that, of interest is that AlliSport are quoting an, on average fuel reduction usage of 10% with a power & torque increase of 18-20%??

I just had my factory intercooler recored with the biggest one we could fit on the tanks. I also had the tanks flowed and the inlet and outlets reamed out. I had to cut the plastic cowling away behind it (which lets the air pass through better as well) but other than that it fits exactly the same as the old one. I did already have my pump tweaked and the intercooler made it quite a bit better. The bigger ones are probably even better still but this a cheaper and more straight forward option. Instead of silicone I put cable ties around the hoses every 50mm or so. It is supposed to help withstand the pressure better. I reckon I could maybe tell it worked, but it didnt register on the seat-o-the-pants-o-meter.

    cheers

    Stefan
