You are right for the British Army ( MOD ) among other defence forces around the world, threatened dire consequences because of breaking axles .. that's why the salisbury in the rear end.

I am 99% sure they are spaced at the same width on a Defender, D1 and D2 so should be a case of just swapping the platform. I am 99% sure The D1 and Defender platform mounts are the same (Defender 90 ones definetley are) (so you can just unbolt them and swap them), D2 have a different bolt centre spacing.

I have just measured a 110 and a RRC chassis. The rear spring perches on the 110 are 12mm further apart.

AFAIK, disco 1 chassis will measure the same as RRC.

Remember early discos have 10 spline axles.

After the defenders changed from salisbury to P38 style rear diff they seem to have more diff problems (Tusker comes readily to mind as a few rear diffs failed and I believe was finally replaced with a Salisbury).

I remember seeing a post by Dave Ashcroft, explaining the reason for the change from salisbury to p38 style was not for diff strength, but because it was easier to strengthen the p38 housing for the loading required for British military landies. The salisbury were failing at the connection between the axle tubes and the cast diff housing.

I wouldn't be surprised that due to pinion lengths the rear drive shaft would need to be a custom length unless the p38 drive shaft happens to fit.

I think if it was engineered (and it should be for insurance) for the change to a disco rear diff, that the GVM would have to be reduced, unless the disco housing was strengthened.

The same thing was happening with the Telstra 130's.
130man has an '01 (I think, whatever, it should have a Sals) ex-Telstra 130 with a Wolf rear end and the bracing has to be seen to be believed, it looks like something straight out of an off-road racer.

Thinking about it, that sort of makes sense as the spring seats are an inch bigger, meaning the centres in theory would be pushed out 12.7mm each side, making a difference of (I would have assumed) 25mm or so in centre width on the rear spring seats.

Interesting that it was 12mm on the one you measured. Maybe the springs sit a bit tighter to the outside of the rails on a 110 which allows for the other few mm. Or maybe its in LR's chassis build tolerances!!

You will need a longer one. Get another - try a late model Defender one, I'd bet your left one that it will be the correct fit.
    Cheers
