    Pinion seal problem?

TD5 Defender with a County front end.

I've removed the pinion seal to replace it, but have I ballsed up?

Is my diff a Salisbury one if it comes from a County? The pinion flange bolt goes into the threaded centre of the pinion shaft rather than a nut that goes around its outside.

If that means I do have a Salisbury diff. then will I get away with just torquing things up? I've just discovered that with a Salisbury I should have marked things up ... but it's too late for that, now.

Hi, You should mark the nut regardless. Is it the Banjo type that can be removed from the housing or do you access the diff from a removable pan on the rear face? The latter is Salisbury.
It's not the end of the world if it's a Banjo as the flange torques up to a shoulder, so in theory you cant overtighten it and upset the preload. Sadly the reality is the opposite of that due to wear and such.
Best try and remember what it felt like as you retighten it

I think from your description it's the latter.

... and it felt pretty damn tight, i'm sure I can remember that

If it's Sals, it will have a collapsible spacer. (solid if you're lucky) They work by being done up to a set torque figure that slightly collapses the spacer and applying the correct preload to the pinion bearings. Strictly speaking they are not really reusable without a little panel beating to give them some of the crush length back.

The obvious question.. are you doing front or rear?

All front ends are Rover type. Salisburys in the rear when fitted. Early TD5 Defenders had them, later ones don't.

Ok, it is the front end ... so, panic over.

if its the rover diff do it up tight with sealasitc on the splines and under the washer held by the nut then be done with it.

dont forget NEW locknuts or loctite when you do the bolts up for the flange and if they are stretched, damaged or unshanked bolts you replace them.

    Have fun.
