Turbo From a Benz 2.7/2.9 diesel

    Hey Guys

Been looking to upgrade my 200tdi's turbo and the idea of a turbo from another car appeals to me for the possibility of a cheaper option. through talking to a couple of friends they have suggested a turbo from one of these diesel benz's.

so far my logic has been that 2.7 or .9 is bigger than 2.5 so i am assuming that their turbo would be a little bigger, but the main appeal for me is the fact that they are VNT(or is it VGT, i am confused with these abreviations but believe that VVT was a dual turbo in a single casing?)

My question to you my learned colleges is, will a turbo from these mercs bolt up, and will this turbo be a suitable, now i know i have a lot to learn about turbo dynamics so point out all my shortcomings.

Am glad to recieve your help

VNT (variable nozzle turbine) and VGT (variable geometry turbine) refer to the same technology. Different turbo manufacturers my do it differently, but with the same objectives (i.e. broader boost pressure curve).

Edit: AFAIK VVT stands for Variable Valve Timing - nought to do with turbos (end edit).

According to my Garrett 2006 catalogue, a variety of Garrett VNT turbos of size GT2256V and a couple of size GT2559V were fitted to MB diesels.

The first 2 numbers, 22 & 25 are the size of the turbine (25 is next size up from 22). The last 2 numbers, 56 and 59 are the outside diameter of the compressor wheel in mm.

Both of these size turbos, but not the specific ones fitted to MB diesels, have been used with good results on 300Tdi engines.

I would be confident in predicting that those fitted to MB have vacuum actuators (to the nozzle vanes) that were controlled by the ECU. You would need to change this and sort out a way of controlling the vanes.

The GT2256V and GT2559V turbos that were fitted to 300Tdi's have boost pressure actuators, similar to common waste gate actuators, but may have different springs inside.

They may do, but there are varying turbos depending on what model and version you are looking at.

The OM611 for example has 3 different stages of tune depending on what its fitted to and there are different turbo's for each. Mainly its the turbine trim, but these are not changeable from Benz and can only be sourced as a complete turbo unit.
Then theres the turbine positioning etc etc etc.
Bolt pattern will most definitely be different and as for a cheaper option.....

I work for Mercedes Benz here in WA...

Think you may need see someone who is experienced in working with turbos if you dont have any experience with them.

    Cheers
