    Replace LT77 Gearbox with R380

I have an '85 Range rover with a stuffed LT77 5 Speed 'box. I am able to get an R380 5 Speed complete with transfer case.
I believe that this will bolt straight in mechanically including drive shafts.
I understand that the gearshifts will be in a different spot but I can deal with that.
Will the clutch from the LT77 fit inside the R380?

Thank-you for your help with this matter in advance.

The R380 is 30mm longer than the LT77 box so you will probably find the prop shafts are different lengths. (There is a short bellhousing model to compensate, but only for the 4cyl diesel http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/part_119.html)

Make sure that you get the gearbox mounts. They use the same holes in the chassis rails but are different for each box.

You should get an R380 out of a disco rather than a Defender and the selector top is in a different position. You can use the Disco transfer lever and gearstick and modify the DI trim if you like.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

This Box is out of a Disco, the link is below.
What drive shafts would I need?
Which clutch would be the one to fit? I assume the R380?

Make sure it is off a V8 D1 rather than a diesel or D2 as some don't have the CDL controls, see if you can also get the prop shafts. The engine side should be the same.

    What ever is available.

Just make sure what you get is as advertised - the R380 was fitted from early 1994 and was not fitted to a 92 disco as indicated in the ad - though could be a typo or the original LT77 replaced at some stage.

Thanks for the tip, I have sent a question on Ebay.
The ones that dont have the CDL controls have the viscous diff and thus have no need for a lever.
Dad has a 87-89 Rangie that has the front drive shaft removed and it still drives in 2WD fine with no CDL

    Good suggestion from Gary.

There is a good description about the issue on the Ashcroft Transmission site Ashcroft Transmissions

No that's not correct, the ZF HP22 auto boxes in RRC had a Borg Warner chain drive transfer with viscous coupling, this is what you describe.

However the early D2 had an LT230 gear drive transfer box (same as your 85 RRC) with an open centre diff but no locking mechanism because they assumed that the traction control would be sufficient. This was rectifed in later D2s.

The Disco 2 transfer cases do not have a viscous coupling - they are a standard transfer case but the earlier versions did not have the controls to work the CDL or did not have a CDL at all - these will not drive with a drive shaft removed - (maybe with the rear one removed and the hand brake applied hard).

    Thanks for that.
To be honest, so long as I can make it bolt in, I will make the controls work. My missus won't drive it as it takes a bit of a knack at the moment to select gears. It broke nearly 2 years ago. I am just getting sick of it.

An operational LT77 would suit me fine; though mine has a different gear change than the one in the pic on ebay. Mine has the gearshift leverat the back and a shaft running from the back of the 'box to the front of the box to act on the selector forks.
