I do have another question though

On the harmonic balancer what is the other mark for
the big cut out with white paint in it about 90 degrees away

Hi Steve ... The motor is being a PITA, is it

1 of the deals is your NOT telling us what IS working ....

    So a list for you

1: When you put it on TDC ... Put small screwdriver inside the 1* plug hole and rock the piston left / right and confirm that the piston is at TDC and the marker on the harmonic balancer is also corresponding to TDC ... Can't miss TDC of the piston ... cause it will rise .. TDC ... then fall

2: Are you actually getting fuel ... Pull out all plugs and are they wet???

3: While all the plugs are out ... hook up all the leads to them and rest them on the motor / get a mate to crank over the motor and see if all the plugs are firing

4: Are you actually getting spark to the plugs ... confirm this while your testing the 8 plugs via firing

5: What is the colour of the spark??

6: Try cranking the motor over tonight in complete darkness ... any spark leaking from the spark system and tit will show straight up ...

7: What brand is the Rotor button???

8: How old is the coil / leads / Rotor / cap

9 what is the brand & serial number of the spark plugs

10: Have you ever overheated this motor??

11: Where is the Dizzy AMP located ... on the dizzy or the Coil (remote)

13: Are you sure that you are getting spark??

14: That bleeden MAF ... have you tried it unplugged?? ... You say the mechanic bashed it with a screwdriver .... Got a mate with a spare known good one to try???

15: Fuel testing ... .spray some (just a bit)of circuit board cleaner ...or Octane or Startyabastard inside the one of the large vacuum hoses near the butterfly .... and see if it fires up for a second ... Watch how much you use this stuff, or you will get a backfire and blow things up

    16: Try starting via ...
Take out the plugs ... Wind the motor over for 10 seconds with foot flat to the floor
Dry out the plugs ... or install new ones .... Turn key / crank the motor for 1/4 of a second ... STOP and switch off ... then restart

17: Has your cam chain jumped a tooth?? ... FUG ... this involves taking off the drivers side rocker cover .... and checking that when number 1 piston is on TDC .... Number 8 is "on the rock" between exhaust / inlet valves

....... That will keep ya busy .....

BTW .... I thought your tossing this motor and upgrading to a 3.9???? .... so why the effort on this one???

Ok ill try and explain what happened

I need to find out if it was intentionally messded up so i can fit he new motor with some degree of confidence that it will start and there are no other problems

I took the car to a mechanic in town as it had a weeping head gasket not much but enough
It was running normal except for a slight miss fire i assume it was leaking into the cylinder aswell as leaking out
A week went by i called the mechanic a couple of times he kept making excuses why he hadn't looked at it yet so said dont worry ill come pick it up

When i get there i see him through the office door hitting the air flow meter with a big screwdriver he kind of looked a bit guilty and called me in
he said he couldn't see the leak it must be something else and tried to sell me a radiator flush
So i pointed out where it was leaking and politely left saying ill ring you when i get the new motor i will get you to fit it still

So jumped in backfired and farted all the way home

The next morning went out to have better look at it and it wouldn't start
first thing i noticed was the leads where not in the right order all the right bank was in a line 1357 i assumed that this was the reason for the farting and back firing
So got on the net got the right firing order and put it right stiill wouldn't start

Next thing i looked at was the rotor button and cap they may have got damaged if he actually had looked at it
Then i noticed that at TDC it wasnt pointing at 1 it was about 90 degrees out ( i think i can set TDC ok )
So again on the net and mostly on here found out how to refit the dizzy so it would be pointing at 1
    Still no start

Now i think i have stuffed up the timing but i cant be certain that its not the air flow meter the wack with the screw driver might be the problem

    Ok to answer the question
    1) Yes it is at TDC i turn till the mark on the crank lines up an the piston is up top on 1 then push hose in see if it leaks
    2)yes
3)havnt checked like that but will
    4)yes
    5)Blue
    6)ok
    7)?
    8)? only just bought it
    9)Uncertain will check
10)Yes not into the red just over 3/4 for about 100 k i think due to the leak it couldn't hold pressure it lost about 1 litre of water
    11)Dont know lol ill check
    13)yep
    14) i have a new one in the mail just seeing him wack it cost me money cant trust it now 330k to melb 600k to syd long walk if it carks it
    15) ok will do
    16)ok
    17)hope not

Check the vacuum advance isnt buggered ... suck on the black hose that goes to it and see if it holds vacuum ... or just sucks air(Stuffed)

When i get there i see him through the office door hitting the air flow meter with a big screwdriver he kind of looked a bit guilty and called me in
I have no idea why you whack it either

Now i think i have stuffed up the timing but i cant be certain that its not the air flow meter the wack with the screw driver might be the problem
If you spray the octane up the manifold ... then the motor will have no choice but to fire up if it has spark .... Also all that flooding of petrol on the miss-matched plugs can stuff em ... hence put new ones in

    Ok to answer the question
    1) Yes it is at TDC i turn till the mark on the crank lines up an the piston is up top on 1 then push hose in see if it leaks So you made sure that the piston was at the top via a screwdriver and watching the harmonic balancer???
    2)yes
3)havnt checked like that but will Onya
    4)yes
5)Blue are you sure its a brilliant blue and not a dull orange??
6)ok Onya ... best way to find dicky leads & coil
7)? I'm looking for the brand Lucus ... If it's anything else, then what your going through is expected >>> Not firing up .... Replace it with the $60 LUCUS or give Bee utey a PM and ask him what FORD rotor fits (much cheaper)
8)? only just bought it .... Well tell me the brand .. or the description of the coil ...
    9)Uncertain will check .... Onya
10)Yes not into the red just over 3/4 for about 100 k i think due to the leak it couldn't hold pressure it lost about 1 litre of water Rod ya radiator
11)Dont know lol ill check AMP's on dizzy get killed when the motor overheats
    13)yep Mmmm ... I was just repeating Q4
    14) i have a new one in the mail just seeing him wack it cost me money cant trust it now 330k to melb 600k to syd long walk if it carks itFug man ... you need some Disco mates ...
    15) ok will do ... Onya
16)ok Another gag is if you have cranked it for a while and your smellin fuel ... crank it with YA FOOT FLAT TO THE FLOOR
17)hope not Neither do I ... BUT what the heck ... i JUST LUV A WILDCARD

....There is a thread on Rotors .... and someone found a Ford rotor that fits perfect ... Bee utey would remember this ....

I had a look at the new motor today
It doesn't have a TDC marking like the old one the old one has TDC in big orange letters with before and after either side

The new one just has the big notch with white paint in it

    The old one has both

    Any thoughts

There just different setup markings .... On the old motor Just do the ....

TDC ... then fall

Now when you figure out that the PISTON 1* is at the very top of it's stroke ... have a look at the markings of the harmonic balancer ... Is it pointing to TDC?? .... or is it way off???

If it's way off ... then just mark the balancer with a white pen and use that mark as TDC ... Then set up the dizzy & see if fires.....

... and the reason why I'm suggesting the above is that Harmonic balancers are a 2 piece item, with a rubber joining them together .... Sometimes they slip and then the TDC mark on the balancer is out of whack ... Hence mark it after finding the "top of piston"

As far as the dizzy goes i cant do anything else

I have tried every way explained (thanks to all for that is a lot of typing)

I have even set 180 out just to be sure

It is definitely not me or the fitment of the dizzy there is something else wrong here

Will an engine normally start with the Air flow sensor disconnected or broken

And yes there is spark i checked all the leads and they do spark and the leads are in the right order

So its not the dizzy button or coil 1cm good strong spark

Im on my out right now to test it with Startyabasterd so ill re post the results

Just remember my warning tho ... Watch how much you use of this stuff, or you will get a backfire and blow things up
