    4BD1 into defender

Gday Guys id like to know the legality of fitting the 4BD1 into mid 90 defenders either 200 or 300 tdi donor body's
Is there a cut off were the 4BD1 cant be used in say a 96 defender ? Also is there a cut off point for fitting one to say a 96 disco ? Id like to know what the go is as i have a good 4BD1/LT95 combo and would like to make good use of it
Also before anyone asks i wont be parting with it

AFAIK it isn't 'legal' (and I use that term loosely), if the engine is manufactured earlier than the vehicle it is going in to.

Still, worth checking with your licensing department, purely on a hypothetical basis, of course...

(Between you and me it is the best thing to do to a Defender, especiallly a 130, with a Turbo added)

AFAIK, the rules are as JC says. HOWEVER - I believe that 4BD1Ts (in trucks etc.) remained in production until the mid 90's, and the emission regs did not change during that period. So... what year is that donor engine you have... ?

As Ben says, that is true that 4BD1's were manufactured to at least 1995 as my motor has this year stamped on the ADR plate on the rocker cover...Brian

The first 2 numbers at the bottom driver's side of the block indicate the year of manufacture.

If you're concerned about year of manufacture, they're still making 4BG1T's.

4.2L, block is externally the same as the 4BD1.

But are they used in a truck with current ADR approval?

I suspect lokka is referring to a 4BD1 from a Stage 1, so won't meet the year of manufacture criteria.

If the engine year was later, there would be no concerns.

I'm not sure there aren't exceptions though. I may be wrong, but my dim memory tells me earlier petrol engines can be used if they use LPG only.

If this is the case, then an earlier diesel engine may meet the emission requirements applied to the vehicle at it's year of manufacture.

AFAIK diesels had few emission requirements for those years when the 300Tdi was fitted to Defenders. I base this solely on my observation that no emission controls were fitted to the 300Tdi in Australia, whereas in some other markets they had egr and electrically controlled fuel injection pumps. They did have the engine breather connected into the turbo compressor inlet, which many 4BD1's don't have.

If this is the case, IMHO an early 4BD1 would meet the same requirement as a 300Tdi, if the engine breather was modified to not vet to atmosphere. Would also need an engine stop device that activates when key is turned off. Neither of these are difficult.

I have seen pics on this forum of disco's with a 4BD1, they would obviously been rego'd with the engine swap. I don't know the years of the disco or 4BD1, but AFAIK little has changed as far as emissions - valve timing (camshaft), injectors and pump calibration have changed, but I doubt this was anything to do with Australian emission requirements.

I would argue on the basis that the 4BD1 engine was used in Isuzu trucks up to whatever year (sometime in the 1990's).

Probably not. Does australia differentiate between road engines and non road engines like the US does?
