There seems to be a lot of opinion and very little fact in these few posts. I have seen registered '96 Isuzu powered Landrovers before. Here's another one for sale:
Land Rover 110 6X6 Infantry Carrier Hard Top 12/1996 Auction (0003-3005416) | GraysOnline Australia
Are people telling me this one can't be registered because it has an Isuzu 4BD1T motor?
ADR70 (emissions - effectively Euro1) came into effect in 1995 for new vehicles. As far as I can find out there is no documentation to prove that the 4BD1T meets Euro1.
Prior to 1995 it was ADR30 which was basically a smoke test and both the 4BD1 and 4BD1T are OK for that.
I've been through this extensively with 2 separate engineers trying to find a way around the ADR70 compliance for a 4BD1T (I wanted to fit a 4bd1t to a 1999 300tdi 130). If the engine had been fitted to a post '95 production vehicle in Aus then it would have been OK, but I think the latest trucks here were 1994?
I've spoken to people interstate that have managed to do it officially due to the different way they are required to declare engine mods/replacements, but here in Victoria its cut and dried. Unless you're just bolting in a factory option engine for the particular vehicle, you have to get it engineered. The engineer has to make sure the vehicle will comply with all ADR's applicable at the compliance date of the chassis.

Uninformed - I think what Dougal was trying to say with the 1994 reference is that if you could find a post 1994 truck here with a factory 4bd1t then it would imply the engine was ADR70/Euro1 compliant, so you'd be OK to fit to a 96 vehicle. Unfortunately they don't exist.

Note that my investigation was done specifically in reference to 110/130 Isuzu conversions (so up to 3500kg GVM). The rules may be slightly different for heavier categories of vehicles like the 6x6.

If it was me buying a 1996 6x6 to register in Victoria, I'd want either prior confirmation from Vicroads that it was OK to register, or a money-back statement from Grays to the same effect.
Edit: I've no idea if the 6x6 has a compliance plate like a civvy landrover, but if they do, and it states ADR70/00 then I'd love to know.

For someone in WA the vehicle may be a good buy if the rego shows the correct engine number and capacity.

For those interstate, last I checked the vehicle would have to go through complete engineering, and I don't like its chances due to the ADR 70/00 issue.

Allow me to solve all the worlds' problems!

Hang on one moment, when were the last of the Bushranger 6x6 Landies built? '96 rings a bell. In which case, the engine must be appropriate for a swap to a '96 model...?

I'll have to see if I have any photos of a '96 model plate from the auctions. I am sure there were new post '94 builds at least.

EDIT: Project bushranger only started in 1994...and REMLR lists 12/1997 year deliveries for new 6x6 4BD1T engined Landies

But do they have ADR 70/00 compliance plates?

For the vehicle in question though the spec of the perentie engines is largely irrelevant though. What is the year of manufacture of the engine fitted to the blue 130?

(of course you could just stick on an ADR 70/00 compliance plate, but the year cast into the block is a bit of a giveaway...)

Where did you here that, your ".... mother? Uneducated naysayer..?"

I know it is hard to read a persons tone on a forum but your coments seem quite rude and dismissive. In fact your comments seem unsubstaniated.

steveG seems to be citing personal experience which tallys with my reading of the relevent standards,VSB's and discussions with my local Authorised Inspection Station (NSW) and also similar disssions with other classic car groups.

I come to this forum with little Land Rover experience and am trying to investigate several options for achieving the vehicle that currently exists only in my mind. That is why I asked the question regarding the date of the vehicle.

In summary my conclusion is - the conversion of a Defender (as opposed to a 110) to 4BD1 engine will require engineering, can only use an engine dated later that the chassis and it would seem that ADR70 provides the sunset clause -1995. At least in NSW (and it would seem VIC aswell).

So while we're going, regarding vehicle modifications that are carried out on the basis of "a factory option", does a 6x6 with a GVM over 3500 really count? If it does then a turbo modifation to an Isuzu should be acceptable without engineering.

    Here's one

    1986 Land Rover 110 County

Extremly clean and original vehicle. Does anyone know it?

But can it really command that price!!!

Others (maybe not as neat) that are for sale for high amunts +10k don't seem to shift.
