    Differences in Valve Covers

Hey guys, from the pics provided within I notice there are two types of valve covers these are; flat type and raised. Without stating the obvious, what are the differences between the two, and does one have better sound damping characteristics than the other?

    Thanks in advance

    Joe

There are two basic types. Cast aluminium and pressed steel. Cast aluminium were on the industrial engines which includes the original landrover motors, all the truck motors are pressed steel.

From there you can have an acoustic cover on the cast aluminium cover which gives it the flat black steel look. The pressed steel covers all have acoustic covers with humps on them, earlier humps are shorter (up to 1988), later humps (1988 onwards) are longer for no better reason than to fit the US EPA stickers.

To add to the above, the aluminium (flat) covers only have an 8mm breather fitting, and are designed to work in conjunction with a side breather. The other type have a 19(?) mm breather and are designed to be stand alone.

The cover on my engine is of flat profile (exactly like rar110), though that would mean its industrial, right? which is weird because i've owned the landy (MY86) since driving off the showroom floor.

I would have thought that they'd use the truck engines. It is rather noisy but I've never been close enough to another 4bd1 to compare. Just putting it out there but I think the hump looks pretty cool, adds some definition haha!

The landy engines are indeed industrial derivatives but get some of the truck features like timing advance devices on the injector pump drives. The truck motors have more silencing gear on them, not only the rocker cover but also on the timing case.

What are you worried about? You've still got the best engine ever put into a landie. Other countries are jealous of our Isuzu powered landies

The longer hump on the later truck engines have 2 small valves in there,I'm not sure what purpose they serve but the short humps don't have them.
Here is an early and late cover side by side looking from underneath and a close up of the valves.

Having just pulled the rocker cover off my truck motor i have noticed it has a rust hole at the back. So i am going to replace it.
Now do i get another truck rocker cover or pull the one off my series3 motor and use that.
Being the aluminium cover with the tin cover on top, is it going to ever so slightly reduce the engine noise over the pressed tin truck cover.
Anyone see any pro's and con's to this?
