I have two bridged batteries in the 6BB1/Mk3 Inter and even with new batteries never get much cranking speed other than just enough to get barely over compression when the diesel starts.

I'm thinking that a lot of the problem is a worn out or 24V starter (or both) and so am looking for a replacement preferably suitable 12V. Hence my question.

Will check out the US markets!

(addit: when you say "bridge two batteries", do you mean run two batteries in series or parallel?
    And.
If in series, could you take a 12V secondary battery charged through an isolator, an switch it over to series on cranking by using a winch change-over relay?)

    Thanks Mike

Unfortunately when you check the details on that item it lists:
    1. "ISUZU 6BB1 Engine Starter"
    2. "24V/11T/4.5KW"
    Diana

Normally parallel - but series when starting:

It sounds like your system needs an overhaul, rather than replacement

It's good to know there are devices manufactured for the job!

However looking at the Bosch unit, my schematic does the same thing, although it uses 2 relays (one single pole normally closed and one double pole change over) to do it where the Bosch has 1 tripple pole change-over.

    Good info.

I think I'll try this proper bridging avenue first.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Hey Lotza

You thinking of getting a starter shipped out of the US?

Still looking at whats best, but I think I have to some investigation first, particularly climbing under the truck and cleaning off the starter to see if it is 24V first.

If 24V are more reliable and easily available in Oz, it may be worth the trouble of the 12-24 parallel-series start change over, otherwise it will be the US for sure.

Don't bother, 12V starter from Ashdown Ingram was $318.00+GST brand new with warranty, no changeover on the 04/03/08, and it's still going strong. Part no. 01-76561384.

    Thanks Gerry

Is that the Isuzu part Number?

The Nippon Denso number is 02-8000-6561

I rang Ashdowns in Dandenong , Vic recently and they advise they only have rebuild kits and not a complete starter assembly.

I will try again with your part number maybe

Anyone know of a compact 24v starter with a 2 bolt mount?

I'd like to plan ahead for the day my 12v starter gives me the finger for putting 24v through it all these years.

They may be looking in the wrong area, that's the Ashdowns part no. off the receipt, quote it and see what they turn up. Mind you, you might save yourself a 100 clams by going for the one in the US. Check the part no.
When I enquired at Ashdowns, they had them as low as $200 and as high as $800 ex GST, brand dependant. I chose the middle ground. Good chance even cheaper now with the high Aus dollar.
