    Hi all

    It's not the starter motor

Starts perfect with good jumper leads direct connected

It's either the starting relay or earth wiring or other wiring

Do I test the earth strap by connecting the - ( negative ) battery terninal direct to the engine block?

The prev owner has made a bit of a mess with the fuse/relay area wiring

I found 2 x 30amp relays in there but they are not fixed to the body

Is it likely to be one of those?

"No , it's not completely dead.It just won't kick over quick enough to get the Isuzu away."

It's either a faulty battery or crummy earth lead off or connection to the chassis if this post of yours is still valid

I'd buy a new earth lead - worked for me !!

    Odd problem- Earth lead

So you connected the jumper leads to the starter motor and block - how did you start it then - by applying +ve to the starter motor solenoid (ie shorting it to the +ve cable), or by turning the key to start it?

If the battery in it is decent, try it just with a good jumper lead connected from the -ve battery terminal to the engine or transmission. Don't use the +ve jumper lead at all.
If it improves AT ALL then you've got a dodgy earth lead (even if it still doesn't go as good a direct connected). Either the one from the battery to the chassis, or more likely the one from chassis to the transmission (mine is across the LH transmission mount).
An earth lead to go between the chassis and the engine/trans from one of the auto places will only cost you about $10.
Its not a bad idea to have more than one lead between the chassis and engine/trans. I've added one across the LH engine mount - easy to get at and one from Supercheap auto fitted perfectly.

    All Good

Wimped out and got an auto elect up to check it out.
Funny you should say that Steve G. He has added an earth lead from chassis to gearbox. Starts great now.

I did however change the clutch slave cylinder today and given that I am mechanically challenged but prepared to have a go I was pretty happy.

The old Isuzu is getting better everyday Doh , don't jinx it

Thanks to all for your help , especially Bacicat

Wouldn't you just switch to 12V start and charge?

Nah, that would involve a lot of rewiring and I'd still have to find a suitable 12v two bolt starter, my current one won't start the engine satisfactorily with 12v pushing it. I'd prefer to stay 24v to lower the cranking current.

When I got the vehicle it could start on one battery, but the engine compression was down due to dust erosion (bad air-cleaner). With good compression the 12v starter can't do it alone, I think my current 12v starter is from a 12v 4BC2 engine. There's a 24v 4BC2 in a truck here but it runs a geared starter that won't clear my chassis well.
