    New 4BD1-T???

    Hey People.
A mate of mine recently had his new defender written off after the ecu got drenched during a deep water crossing. Now he is looking at fitting a 4bd1t to his rig. Is it still possible to buy brand new 4BD1T engines (genuine)?

Also, are there any obvious/ major implications assoc. with fitting this engine to a late model (2006) defender?

    Cheers

Isuzu stopped making the 4B series in 1995 I am pretty sure. You can still buy them but they are made in China now and have a lot of differences to the genuine one. I wouldn't touch one. Better off to find a used one and recon it. As for the legalities of fitting it to a later model, I don't think it would pass the pollution requirements (ADR'S).

4BG1T industrial motors are still in production. You'd need to fit the appropriate bellhousing and flywheel (industrial flywheels are monsters) and possibly a timing advance device on the injection pump drive sprocket.

Of course technically possible and legally possible are two different things.

As Brian said, except the marine version (4BG1?) is still made new.

The 4BD1/T only meets Euro 1 or 2 (depending on year of manufacture). 2006 would be Euro 3.

The 4H engines superceeded the 4B engines. They would pass emissions, but it would be a bit more work to fit one.

Thanks for your comments. The emissions/ legalities restrictions are a real bummer!! Is there any way of retro fitting the 4BD1 to comply with Euro2/3 standards?

Pete, I did manage to take a look at a 4H engine at the local suzi dealer. They are however significantly larger than the 4BD1 being a 5.2lt. Does it fit and moreover, are there any other engine options for the 4BD1 in replace of the TD5?

    Cheers guys

There are several 4H engines. Which start at 4.3L(?) 4HF1 from memory (which may be available in EURO3 spec).

I assume you have seen this thread?

The 4HE1 will physically fit from the dimensions, however the exhaust is on the driver's side (minor issue) and the starter is on the gearbox side (more major issue). Probably not insurmountable, but will require a good engineer/faricator to get it to fit.

Another option is the ISUZU 4JB1T, which I believe came in Euro 3 spec.

Also other 4J series engine options:

Car written off because of a drowned ECU? or drowned electrics in general? Surely an aftermarket programmable ECU would be an option Wolf 3D or something from Motec comes to mind lot easier than turfing the entire motor.

I don't think either of those will play ball with a commonrail diesel. Bosch motorsport make a few for CR diesels, the price is eye-watering.

    2006 would be a td5 wouldn't it, not a puma, so it wouldn't be a common rail.

As Nero says, that sound a bit unlikley to have been written off because of that! I did the same to mine a few years ago (filled ecu with water) You can pick them up pretty cheap off ebay. Mine worked again once I had dried it out, and I still have it as a spare.

Although if it was a puma, I can imagine filling the dash and so on with water could be far more problematic!

Sorry to be a killjoy, but if the vehicle was written off by the insurance mob for water damage, isn't that a 'statutory write off'? If so, then it'll need a chassis change to get it back on the road?
If i'm wrong, please let me know. (gently, hahaha)

    Cheers,
    Daryl.
