Long story short...
I've got a Ford AOD that's been behind a 4BD1T for over 13 years in a county coming my way.
Until I get it into my possession all the finer details are a bit sketchy, but I have a stack of documents from the original owner about his vehicle and the conversion.
Originally a farmer got an engineering mob to design and manufacture the adaptors for 4BD1T, AOD, LT230.
He sold this to a bloke who has had it 13 years and until last year he had trouble free operation. Last year something went wrong (not sure of actaully what) and now the torque converter has gone. So he's converted to manaul given he lives out in woop woop.
Ratio's of the AOD
2.40
1.47
1
0.67 Tall over-drive!
R 2.0
The original AOD was hydraulicly controlled and is so in this conversion coming.
Now, from my little bit of research;
The AOD was later updated to an electronic version
Then updated to the 4R70W (electronic), and was stronger with ratios;
2.84
1.55
1
.7
R 2.23
The two transmissions are such that many parts can be interchanged and it appears can be built very strong.
There is a wealth of knowledge on these boxes and how to build them strong.
I am thinking 4R70W that is hydraulicly controlled would be a nice option (if possible)
Once I get a hold of it all I will provide more details....

If you look at Ford Truck Enthusiasts, 1948-2011 Ford F150, Super Duty & SUV owners community and information source. Covers F100, F-150, F250, Bronco, Ranger, Explorer, Expedition, Lighting, Escape and More there's a bunch of guys buying up crown vics etc for the front ends to convert the F series to IFS. Buying whole cars for a few hundred, would cost in shipping but might find a bargain stateside.
I can't make the link smaller it's typed shorthand, reappears as that crap sorry.
Interesting!
I'm partially into my A442F trans project, I'm using an 80 series TF case (full time 4x4) attached to the back of a 100 series A442F, and a Compushift stand alone ECU etc.
I'm only amassing parts at the moment, I'll post pics etc when it all starts to come together.

The A442, is it the same as behind the 1/2/3UZ engines? Have been long term planning a 3UZ with associated auto and tfr into a D2 for a while. I can get 300Kw without thinking and even more torque plus a safe 7000rpm redline.
AFAIK the petrol version isn't as beefier as the diesel A442. I was advised to obtain a diesel version, so i got one ex 100 series 1HDT-FTE.
I am not an expert on which version is better etc, its just what I was told by Rodney at Wholesale Automatic Transmissions, who build these boxes to 800Hp+ outputs etc apparentlyThey are very informative, helpful, and really seem to know there stuff.
I don't get into this ' Its no longer a Landy' stuff, for arguments sake the ZF 4HP22 etc is not at all 'exclusive' to LR, so an Aisin Trans and an LC80 fulltime transfer case is fair game to fit up to an Isuzu in a 110 in my books
