    front output shaft bearing

A ratly tinny noise and a bit of vibration had me under the car for a look. Seems the front output shaft bearing needs to be replaced. Can I change this out without removing the housing? Just wondering how tight that bearing is in there, if it will slip out with the circlip removed? cheers in advance.

From memory mine was reasonably tight, and I either used a hammer and drift to get it out, or put it in the press (it was a while ago now so memory is a bit hazy).

I haven't checked, but I don't think its a big deal to get the output housing off. The center diff forward bearing is in the main case, so that doesn't get disturbed when you pull the housing off. Unless there's some access reason why you can't pull the housing off easily in the vehicle that would definitely be my approach - pull the housing and do the bearing on the bench.

Edit: Mine's an LT95, so above info relates to that.

Did mine recently on an LT230 trasfer box (fitted to and LT85 gearbox). It was tight and can't see how I could have got it out without pulling the housing off. Pulling off the front housing on the LT230 will also disturb the diff bearing preload unless you can put the exact thickness gasket back on.

cheers for replys, forgot to say mine is the lt95. In my hunt to find the parts it seems the front and rear output shaft bearings are the same. Is that correct? might as well do the rear one while i'm at it.

Check your parts catalogue as they are different bearings front to rear. From memory one is 6207 and the other RLS10.

The rear one is a bit more work than the front but no great drama. The gasket between the speedo drive housing and the case affects center diff bearing preload so measure the gasket thickness and refit the same thickness. Aftermarket gasket sets are often different thickness so beware. When I rebuilt my box I made my own from suitable thickness gasket paper.

If you are pulling both housings off you might as well pull the center diff and check the spider gear washers in that while you're at it.

I'm looking at transfer kits with seals, bearings and gaskets but have a choice of suffix A or B? my serial number is 15c 0135 without either of those numbers. Which is compatable? my landys a 1981 civilian series 3 stage 1.

I don't recall anything about suffix A or B when I was buying bits for mine.
The Stage1 LT95's are pretty much the same as the RRC ones - except the Stage1 has a longer front housing (about 30mm from memory) and large front output flange. All the Stage1 boxes were 1.33:1 final drive, whereas the RRC had a few different ratios depending on model/engine etc.
There are a couple of other small differences such as the speedo drive gear and handbrake mechanism, but for your purpose you can consider the boxes to be the same (I used the RRC parts breakdown for all the bits in mine and never had any dramas).

Any idea what the difference is between the 2 kits you are looking at? If you post up some links I'll have a quick look.

I'm not familiar with the older landie stuff, but I'm thinking that they Series and aren't for the LT95.

    LT95 stuff here:
    Land Rover Parts - GEARBOX - LT95 (4 SPEED)
    Land Rover Parts - G/BOX BRG+GASKET KIT - L/ROVER LT95

No separate kit for the transfer itself, but you should be able to work out a list from the descriptions on the second link if you dont have a LT95 parts breakdown ( Dave's RRC CD has the one I used for mine ). Roverparts should have the individual parts and be able to get it all together for you.
