    Ford 302 V8 to 4bd1t in 110 6x6, where to start?

Tomorrow i take delivery of my new truck, one of the civilian 6x6s made as part of the army 6x6 perentie project. The original config was as a tourist bus and I am turning it into an expedition truck for a round the world trip in a few years time.

Anyway, somewhere along the lines someone replaced the factory 4bd1t with a Ford 302 V8 :s
Seeing as i don’t own shares in BP i plan to put it back the way nature intended with a 4bd1t.

Although familiar with Land rovers (this is my 4th) I am new to the world of Isuzu power!

I am not really sure where to start, which will be easier/cheaper; 4bd1 out of a county and turbo/intercool it, or a 4bd1t out of a truck and make it fit the land rover?

From reading on here there is a lot of potential for improving the performance with different turbos, more boost and intercooling etc. Given the weight of the truck, this is definitely something i will be looking to do (of course keeping fuel economy and reliability in mind)!

All advice will be much appreciated.

    (Project/Build thread to follow shortly)

    Thanks for the help!

There are a lot of threads on the subject, particularly useful is the information on Grubbs MSA gearbox conversion as it specifies many of the differences in the two types.

A benefit of using a truck 4BD1-T will be that the engine is designed to run with a turbo and will have the oil squirters for the pistons. However it won't have the flywheel housing/adapter to mate with the LT95 gearbox. The truck donk will also most likely be 24V and may not have the power steering pump facility.

A Land Rover 4BD1 will have all the bits in the right place to mate the LT95 and the Land Rover chassis. It will also be 12V. It won't have the oil squirters and most likely won't have all the fittings for the turbo, particularly the cooling and oil lines. You will also have to change your clutch pressure plate and friction plate.

Has your chassis engine mounts been modified for the Ford V8?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

as lotzalandies stated there is some differences between both...if you can find a 4bd1t for the right price i would recommend that!
i personally run a 4bd1 with turbo intercooler and a bit of other stuff done and try to squeez every bit out of the motor i can but ultimately i would have liked to get a factory 4bd1t just for the little advantages when chasing HP but could not warrant throwing away a 4bd1 with a known history from brand new...either will provide enough power for what you want and will make the ford look like rubbish...

The problem is that this is a civilian perentie 6X6 and the 6X6 mechanism requires a LT95 transfer. It won't work with an LT230.

Yeah I thought that was the case, LT95 is one of the best of the lr bunch so should be fine.

Adapting a factory 4bd1 turbo to fit the lr seems like the best option, I can change the alternator and other auxiliaries.
I will have a good search on here and see what info I can find re. what needs changing then come back and pester you all with more questions!
