Ran fine, then rough, now won't start..

    Hi Guys,

After sitting for a year while I've been replacing the firewall and installing a new loom, yesterday I got to the great moment when I was able to start it for the first time.

It turned over once, then launched into life and ran fine.

Since then, I tidied up some of the engine loom, and started it a few times to make sure it was all still OK - it started and ran fine.

This afternoon I bled the clutch.. and when I started it to see if I had done it OK it started to run rough... like it was missing on a cylinder. Right away I turned it off and look for anything obvious.. nothing.. started it again, and it ran REALLY rough.. like it was on a single cylinder. it ran for 3-4 seconds before I turned it off.

I cracked the nut on the first injector and diesel flows with no bubbles (without me doing anything else) there is 1/4 of a tank of diesel.

Not really sure where to go from here.. I can't think of anything I might have done.. the air filter is clean and free from obstruction.

It wont start at all now.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Hey Flagg...I would aim towards fuel blockage or the little gauze filter blocked on the lift pump...clean everything out,new filters, check intake system and then bleed everything just before startup also check that the stop lever is against its rest...

You've now made me scared that mine won't start once all back together

Yeah went for a walk to think it over, can think of anything else. I just hope it isn't fungus or anything the requires me to drop the tank.

    Sadly, my money's on fungarse.

I learn't long ago to winterise my diesels with Moreys additive, as I don't use them much in winter.

    Good luck with it.

Drained the sediment filter.. it was clean.. can I take it apart any more than that? does the bottom unscrew? or is there a bolt to undo?

So I understand that there are two filters - one large one that is attached the the inlet manifold and one smaller one that I can't seem to find!

Where is the smaller one? I'm trying to find a thread that describes it but I can't find that either

You need to remove the banjo bolt where the fuel hose from the tank goes into the the bottom of the injection pump (actually its the lift pump) on the engine. There is a small gauze filter inside that banjo bolt.
Its a bugger of a thing to remove as its really close to the engine mount. I found that a short ring spanner (17mm??) worked OK. Even more fun getting it back in!

as illustrated in that diagram yes it would be number 11 however that diagram differs slightly from what most lift pumps look like on the 4bd's as that one suggests that it is on the side most are underneath...you cant really go wrong so just pull it out clean it in some metho and put it back in....let us know if it starts

Mate pull it out and leave it out. We did this and replaced it with a filter /seperator which is mounted in an "easy" to get place in the engine bay.
