I was contemplating a 9spd road ranger box for the reasons you said about not needing low range however the weight factor for a landrover is to much I recon ...

I am not familiar with that model but if it has a common rail system no it will require electronics some earlier models that have a standard VE or A style pump with electronics will also require the controls to be left alone as these electronics control fuel delivery and timing...
Having said this there is nothing wrong with common rail systems as that is what the competition diesels are now adapting to older engines eg: cummins 6bt as the injection pressures are much higher and fuel delivery can be dialed in for maximum power at certain rpms but keep in mind the people doing this stuff have numerous experts making it happen..

I beleive the early ones (inline pump, not commonrail) are electronically managed. You'll likely get it to run, but at least timing advance is electronic.

Rearward facing starter is the real bugger on those.

Being RHD I think the starter is not a big problem Maybe the inline pump could be
modified to full mechanical as the engines seem too good not to try something

Have a look at my pics and John's pics in the link above. The problem is the starter will be in the cab!

Did you get a model year for that engine?

Cheif, 10mm plungers. Ask your mate what frame the pump in the 4HE1 uses.

The pump on the pictured engine is an 'AD'. This is included in the numbers on the tag.

I went down the path from the information in those pics and the elements wouldn't physically fit my 'A' pump is what I was told
