Definitely a stronger option! Bit trickier if you need a new input gear though, and not as serviceable, but chances it breaks are very slim.
Damn you noel, how will i ever sleep now😊

Also it does kill any endfloat issues as well.

So if i was to get some shafts made up, would the dowels need to be drilled at the same time or after? Just thinking about heat treating

All tho the 10 spline shaft is more than adequate when made from 4140,4340
or similar it needs to be thru hardened to increase core strength as well as harden the splines for reduced wear. This process nearly always results in a bent shaft which needs to be straightened ,sometimes easy some times not
By increasing the size of the shaft and nitriding the shaft remains basically as machined apart from increased case hardness.Pics 1/ new ashcroft frc 8917 gear the other a disco gear both have a.125" hole for grease thru drilled and orings for seal at other end. Both have as well as 35--40 ton press fit 4- 10 mm
dowels with a stainless safety band .I would think you would have a barrow load of busted axles and TC parts before you would break it
