    Difference between engines

    Hello Isuzu enthusiast.
I am always considering putting a diesel into 76 classic.
    On further investigation I have been told either a 4db1 or a 4de1 (??)
I have also been told that Holden rodeo's used a 2.8 isuzu engine.
Then I have also been told that the isuzu NPR or npk maybe the way but aren't
they the same as the 4db or e1's (???)
A little confused and need some guidance on what is closet to the engine mounts
from the 3.5 and what will go with the 4 speed or is it best to put anither gear box in???
A little help can go a long way.

    Thanks

With Isuzu's the 'B' denotes a family of similar engines '4' or '6' is the number of cylinders 'D', 'E' 'G', etc. are different displacement, 'T' is turbocharged.

JRA (Jaguar Rover Australia) fitted 4BD1 and 4BD1T's to 4x4 and 6x6 Land Rover 110's, and the 4BD1 in series 3 stage 1's. Some (not JRA) have swapped Isuzu 4BE1 engines in Land Rovers or Range Rovers.

The Rodeo and Jackeroo, used the Isuzu 4J engine family and not much is common with the 4B.

Although JRA used the 4 speed LT95 with the Isuzu 4BD1 engine, it has a different bellhousing to what is used with the V8 engine. They also used a different flywheel housing on the 4BD1 to what Isuzu use on their truck engines. About the only way to find the matching LT95 bellhousing and flywheel housing is to find an old series 3, stage 1 or a 110. They are not very common as separate parts - think of hen's teeth.

In fitting the 4BD1, JRA removed the V8 mounts from the chassis and welded in new mounts some distance forward of where the V8 mounts are. They also changed the mount on the LH side of the engine block to what Isuzu use on the truck engines.

To go into more detail is not justified until you sort through some of these issues.

Just out of interest, which models/years of Isuzu trucks had the 4BD1-T and MSA-5R gearbox?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Isuzu npr from 86 to early 90's has the engine. I'm not sure about the r series box. My g box came from a 4be powered isuzu.

4 tonners which in later got the 400 designation, but earlier on could only really be identified by the longer wheelbase. Model code starts with NPR59 for the 86 year, but I'm not sure of later model codes.

3 tonners (NPR57 later 300 designation) were 3.3 litre NA 4BC2 then 4BE1. Some 4 tonners also got the NA 4BD1, but these are rare.

Further to Dougal's post, NPR59 from 1989 have the better 4BD1T engine with larger (300mm) clutch. From 4/90 on they have the clutch for the larger gearbox shaft.

IMHO it really is worthwhile getting the post 88, 4BD1T engine.
