    Diesel Runaway

On my engine I have a unused butterfly valve in the inlet manifold witch I intend to set up as an emergency shut off. I am just wondering if anybody has ever needed one .Have considered 1/ spring loaded with manual trigger under bonnet 2/ with electric solenoid switched from cab 3/switched from unused magnetic pickup 4/ connected in with the fuel pump shut off or just forget it and if ever

    Paranoid Yep!

i wouldn't be too worried AM, it isn't as prevalent as some may think.

I rewired the solenoid on my D2 TD5's butterfly to run from a button switch mounted on the dash powered via a fused supply directly from the battery. I used a red button switch because its operation would not be confusing unlike a toggle switch if the vehicle was upside-down. I also had the solenoid powered from a home-built microprocessor based engine oil pressure monitor so the the engine would immediately be stiffled if oil pressure was ever lost. Not so much being paranoid but why not have the capability as I had already disabled the butterly.

I could have used one of those but it was most probably my fault anyway and a stupid silly mistake.

A 'Runaway' is not something that happens often, but my god it makes you run around like a headless chook when it does!!! it is usually caused by something and does not just happen... stuck rack, fuel wound up too much, overfilled sump, blown turbo. We had a Fendt tractor that had been sat for a while.... Turned the key and away she went!! We were half prepared but it still scared the crap out of me.. I was the one that capped the manifold! Been wary since! When the 101's new engine arrived last month and I started that for the first time, I was ready with that flat piece of plate again!!!! Not needed this time tho. If the flap is there, its not a huge cost to fit a pull cable and have the cab end of it discreetly mounted somewhere!
