    Water pump leak

    Hi guys,
finally put a new radiator in that doesn't leak and the next weak spot in the system revealed itself, a nice leak from one of the water pump bolts. According to the Isuzu parts people in Hobart there is no gasket used here just sealant but it looks like a gasket has been used on mine. Just wondering what other people have done when working on the water pump. Is this a common leak point?

Assuming its not leaking anywhere else, if you're just looking for a quick way to seal it up I'd remove the bolt give it a quick clean in the hole and re-install the with some Permatex #3 or similar non-setting sealant.

If you're not planning to revisit it for a long time, I'd pull the pump off the block and reseal it properly. There's a steel backing plate on the back of the pump, a gasket between that and the pump, and IIRC also another gasket between that plate and the block. Either of those gaskets or the plate itself could be the cause of coolant getting in around that bolt.
If your plate is corroded/pitted, the genuine Isuzu plate was easily sourced and only about $20 when I replaced mine a couple of years ago.

Thanks Steve. That's the information I was after, and my thought exactly on sealing up the bolt for the time being.

    Cheers,
