    Wiring/Ignition/Newbie

Hi everyone, I have just bought a 1983 109 Safari 5 door station wagon with the Isuzu non turbo. I have some issues, and I hope to get help here. Firstly, the starter motor is cactus- I have to short out the contacts to start her. Where do I get a new one from? Or should I get it rebuilt?
Second, the entire ignition barrel is stuffed, and some idiot has tried to wire in a starter switch- it is a mess. The ignition barrel has the kill cable built in, I need a new one but can't find any details on which one to buy. Any suggestions on buying/rewiring in a new switch, and also the starter motor would be helpful. It is my first Landy, and I want to fix her for my regular drive.
Finally, is there a good wrecker/parts supplier in my area. I live one hour from Port Macquarie, 2 from Newcastle.
    Cheers,
    Steve.

All four x 4 at Kotara (Newcastle ) are ok for spares and will post stuff. You can order online or over the phone. I wouldn't use their workshop again but can't fault their parts section.

Oh yeah, the other thing is if were me I'd sort the ignition switch first and see if that made any difference to the starter motor.
    Cheers

There's not much to the starter motor's, so if you can short it out and get it started it sounds like its probably not too bad.
IMO wiring is the biggest headache with these older vehicles.

Not sure which contacts you are shorting out, but if you take a wire from the main positive feed and touch it on the small connection on the side of the solenoid does it turn over?

If they are like the 110's, I'm pretty sure there is another relay somewhere in the start circuit.

If the starter motor isn't too bad its pretty easy to give them a bit of a birthday at home. New brushes can be got from Ashdown Ingram (take your old ones as a sample), along with solenoid contacts that just need the shape modifying slightly (again take a sample). From memory there is one bearing that can't be replaced easily, but the others are cheap and easy to to do. I did those things to the starter that came with my '81 4bd1 and its never given me an ounce of trouble in the ~40K km's since then.

New ones can be got via ebay from the USA for reasonable prices as they had 12v 4bd1 powered vehicles over there. Aftermarket quality so won't be as good as the original though.

I might have an ignition switch here somewhere that has the stop cable, so give me a shout if you don't have any luck elsewhere and I'll see if I can dig it out.

thanks you guys. I agree with both, I researched last night and discovered the All Four place in Kotara on ebay. Gonna get on the phone today. I also reckon getting the wiring sorted first is the best idea.....looking to remove the front end sheet metal, and the entire dash, to get decent access. Might as well fix any issues straight away. Gonna need a whole new dash, the old one is cracked and ****ty. I can't find a workshop manual anywhere, so am working it out as I go. Are there any tricks to removing the guards and bonnet??

Steve- I would appreciate if you could find it, and I will happily purchase it from you. I can find a few on ebay etc, but none with the stop cable. Was that a specific model? This is gonna be an interesting resto!!

    Thanks heaps-
    Steve

OK update time. Since my last post I have learned that my vehicle is a 1981 Stage 1 Station Wagon, with the Isuzu 4BB1 engine.....

I have shorted all 3 posts on the starter motor, and it turns over. When I run juice to the starter post it whirs, but wont engage, and when I run juice to the spade terminal, I get nothing. Would that be a faulty solenoid?
I have also found a remote solenoid(the same as in my 79 Falcon) mounted in the engine bay. I have bench tested it, and it is kaput. So......drop out the starter motor, take it to the local auto sparky, and buy a new remote solenoid? Sound right?

Also, thanks heaps to SteveG for helping out a complete stranger(me) and posting an old ignition barrel to me. Much appreciated.

Gonna watch some cricket now, and wait for the wise words from you guys

Pretty sure that remote solenoid isn't required.
Engine in my county is from a stage1 and works fine off the normal county wiring. I can't recall offhand if it has a small relay in the start circuit, but definitely doesn't have a remote selenoid.

If the starter spins when you apply power directly to the motor but not to the starter solenoid trigger wire it definitely sounds like a solenoid issue to me. Could be as simple as a worn/pitted contact which is easy to replace.
I'd drop the starter out and pull the solenoid to have a look, and wire up without the external solenoid.
