    Relay clicking

Hi everyone- my new ignition barrel has arrived, and on initial connection I am getting power at accessories, on, but when I turn to start i get a click from some relays in the middle of the dash. What are these relays, and can I bypass them and feed the white/red wire directly to the starter? Some muppet has destroyed all my harnesses- I don't know what goes where.
    Cheers.

Ahh this is hard and frustrating. I've felt your pain - and installed a brand new loom (and cooked it, but that is now sorted... almost).

The best recommendation that I can make is to sit down with a few copies of the wiring diagram and the colour code and systematically work through it. Draw over the wiring diagram with a marker noting voltages and where you get a break in the circuit.

There are a few circuits that are connected to the ignition that are hard to work out - like the oil pressure light, reverse light and centre diff lock warning light.

What relay is clicking is hard to tell over the internet. Sadly, to really fix it you might have to drop the dash and systematically work through each wire. You really can't do this with the dash installed as you can't trace between the instrument cluster and the fuse box.

Don't bypass relays, you will end up cooking things.

thanks heaps Flagg. I forgot to mention that the dash is all out, which makes it easier. The relays clicking are in the centre bit that has the brake and park brake lights, also a pull switch(that I dont know what does). I just have no idea what these 2 relays do.

It sounds like this is the starter relay, if you bypass it and go direct to the starter you will destroy your new ignition switch. Get your self a genuine workshop manual and you can download the british standard wiring colour code, this will tell you what colour wire does what job.

flagg- can't upload pics at the moment(I having software probs), but I think Dave is right. It is the white/red wire from the switch, running to these relays, that should then connect to starter. I am going to take the starter out and get it tested.

    wow Mariner. Awesome job!

Flagg- I will try to attach some pics I took with my phone.
It is the centre dash piece, under the windscreen centre. There brake light, diff lock light, park brake light, a pull switch, and 2 relays. If anyone can enlighten me I would give my first born

I don't have them on my 110, nor did I with the original loom.. Try checking if the starter solenoid wire is hot when you turn the ignition and then tracing the stater solenoid wire back from the starter - you will end up at the starter relay.

Easiest way to do this is with a buzzer or a lamp that you clip or pin on the the wire you want to measure.
