 Can't confirm exactly as my MSA is jammed in under a shelf, but looks like the original handbrake drum is probably about 6mm thick. 
Be pretty easy to cut the outside off the drum in a lathe and be left with a nice spacer.....
Possibly too thick for yours, but might be a simple option for someone starting from scratch and can tweak the housing length slightly to suit.
