Initially worried I might be stranded in the middle of suburbia, I soon realised the mighty 4BD1 didn't care. After finishing its snack, it cheerfully dragged us home in front of my now 3 (or is it 6?) speed gearbox.
As I'm unsure if the engine will next choose to dine on the clutch, or go back to finish off the (bento) 'box, I thought I'd best be getting some advice.
Does this sound as expensive as it feels?
Is an LT95 rebuild beyond the capability of an amateur with SCA branded tools?
Did I make the wrong call putting RX Super in the LT95 (discussions on that were confusing). How did this happen?
Will the LT95 be very unstable now? Assuming theres metal now swimming around in there. It really does feel normal, apart from 1st. I know she should not be driven like this, but the Perentie seems comfortable soldiering on. And having another vehicle off the road (the bad definition) is not ideal at this time. (I will have to register - and drive - the old Camry that is currently grazing out in the back yard).
As always, any and all advice appreciated.
Dave, It sounds like you may have lost the snapring off the rear end of the mainshaft. This does happen occasionally and gives the sympton you have described. Easy way to check is to take the round cover off the back of the transfer case (only about 8 13mm bolts hold it on). When you have this off you should see a gear on the shaft which should have a shim and a snapring behind it on the end of the mainshaft just in front of the bearing journal. If the snapring is out of the groove on the rear of the mainshaft and just sitting there loose therein is your problem. If it is there is a bit of a trick involved in getting everything back in place before you can get that snapring back in the groove. Get back to me and I will guide you on how to do it. If it is still in place on the shaft behind the gear the problem will be in the gearbox itself (either 1st gear is cactus or the synchro hub or selector pads. Check the snapring out first and get back to us.
Cheers......Brian
