Do you have any other vacuum operated things? Difflocks, heater controls? You can buy a vacuum gauge for about $30.. maybe borrow one?
Hey guys,
Recently my brake booster stopped working and im trying to figure out if it's the booster or the vacuum pump.
About 3 weeks prior, the alternator bracket snapped and the alternator copped quite the beating shaking around, though the vacuum pump is still sucking air when I hold my thumb against the hose though I'm unable to measure the vacuum pressure.
When the engine is idling I can hear a sucking noise coming from the under the brake pedal so I'm not sure if the vacuum pump is on the way out or if the brake booster is.
How would I go about diagnosing this further? Brakes are incredibly hard but still functional and when I depress the pedal I'm definitely compressing air inside the booster.
Any ideas?

It will be the booster from the symptoms you have described. Check that the plastic check valve on the front where the hose joins it is not cracked or broken or the rubber seal is not damaged. If all is ok there the booster will need replacing.

disconnect the vac line from the engine side of the booster adn stick your thumb on it.
if ti sucks onto your thumb nice and firmly then its not the pump nor is it thevac acutator for the CDL.
most likely its the boost and you'll need the rebuild kit for it its uausally the blanc valve or front eal if the casings not crackd

Champions, thanks guys.
The vac pump seems to be working - it does suck on to my thumb nice and firm but takes a couple of seconds to do so.
Haven't seen the plastic check valve - will have a look in a sec - otherwise, where does one seek a rebuild kit?

thats normal at idle.
it can take upto 10 seconds at idle to pump down the booster from atmospheric pressure.
with the fitting blanked with your thumb the vac line should hold vacuum for at least a minute once you shut down the engine.
one of the other common leaks is the rubber gorrmet around the white plastic elbow fitting on the booster this is also the one way valve.
when you have the one way valve off you should be able to blow air from the booster side towards the vac pump but not the other way (if you're game try sucking on it while its still hooked up to the line, if you can draw air through it its leaking.
