that's my point, $1700 for a kit is a good deal, better than trying to pull it all together yourself

more so when you look at there costs to fitt a LT380 to a 4BD or there cost to fitt a turbo, which makes it much more preferable to do it yourself

I need your sage counsel on this. I currently own a td5 defender 130, and have been dreaming of getting an ex army 110 and doing it up in it's stead.

The other day I stumbled on a Perentie 110 GS which had been turbod and painted and had some other accessories fitted. The owner bought the vehicle as a promo vehicle for his gym, then bailed out of the business venture and is selling the vehicle off.

He's asking $20,500 which is about $4000 more than any other Perentie on Carsales at the moment.

Ive attached some images of the receipt he had for the professional instal of the turbo, and the dyno run readings.

Ive driven it and it has typical perentie charm (I am an ADF member and have driven many of these vehicles so Im not going in blind) but I have a few questions of you - the Isuzu master race:

    1. The turbo has been installed with no evidence of changing any of the internals to 4BD1 T specs (the owner isnt mechanically minded and couldnt answer my questions) it has travelled about 200,000 kms probably about 20,000 with the turbo - is this a huge issue? How much does it cost to get the internals?

    2. Will a truck cab or hardtop fit over the ROPS fitted to the perentie? About how much do these cost?

    3. Can aircon be fitted to the 4BD1 T? (wishful thinking I know, but Im curious)

    4. It currently isnt intercolled, I would aim to do that but is it achievable?

    5. My td5 is having consistent fuel pump issues and power issues, will I face this with the 4BD1 T?

    6. Is power steering a doable upgrade?
Yes it is and a very good upgrade too!
Will be fitting a kit to our Perentie very soon.

    7. Im going to put 35s on it as soon as I get it (if I do) reckon it will pull through?
They have rather high first and reverse gears as it is, so I think 35's might lift the gearing a bit too much.
If you go this way do "item 6" as well!!!!

    8. Its running the LT95 what are some good 5 speed boxes and could it be done by me?
If anything a lower first gear and another gear in the box somewhere to close the ratios up would be a better choice. We cruise ours at 90kph and find that a good happy medium, but we have cruised at 110 and it does that without effort. I think their top speed is about 130+ and if you wanted to set some land speed records I am sure the 4BD1 would happily run on the governor all day. But why would you!!!!

    9. is 20,000 a fair price for him to ask? Im queasy about the price tag given it will basically be a daily driven project car.

    10. What am I forgetting/not thinking of? What traps do people fall in with these things?

Thanks in advance for all your help guys!

Thanks for the replies so far guys!

I would love to get a PERENTIE 110, I've done many kms in them at work and theyre awesome. But as I suspected 20,000 for one that's already turbod with some extra stuff doesn't really add up.

I think I will try and get a standard FFR or GS and go from there. A 10,000$ project car is fine, 20,000 is a bit far.

I'd like to keep hearing everyone's thoughts on the questions I posted though. It's very valuable insight.

    Cheers,

    Tom

I have a county and a 6x6 perentie both are great, i would love a GS 4x4 and do all of the things you are thinking of, fit your own turbo and intercooler there is heaps of info on here to get you started. Get 1 with a winch so you dont have to add it later. I think the truck cab sounds tops. Would look great in black and gray with sawtooth aloys and 35's

this is where i get losed, why a PERENTIE 110 when you can get a county 110 isuzu for about the same money, but you get a roof and doors and probably a lot of other goodies as well, i know of one county that is the bees nees with every thing. the owner has some health issues and may waver with 20K under his nose, now that would be worth it.

But really ADF stuff is already striped down and flogged, so you buy one just because it costs more? because of the paint? or is it a hero thing? i just do not get it.

... if you seriously do not get it '85, I would venture to say you've never had much experience with a Perentie.

We're fortunate in having both here (turbo'd wwith p/s) and while the Perenties sure have some LR shortcomings, the overall utilitarian nature of the chassis is so much better than a 110 of the era.

The ability to fit even an oversize 255 spare underneath is only one factor that makes it so. Large door pockets beat wind-up windows any day.

The Perentie wiring maze even with its complications is far more user friendly than the civvy one (I've just been installing a wired reversing camera in one of ours).

The major downside I see with a Perentie, which is simply overcome with jerrycans is the smaller fuel tank.

Obviously other people have other ideas .

...only if you have access to a dyno to check your installation

Also take into account that a 85 County will have done large mileage and will probably be full of rust
A Perentie for the same money will have neither of these issues

    Thanks for the question '85!

Don't get me wrong a County would be excellent. The only reason I was leaning perentie is because:

    1. Gal Chassis
    2. Storage Bins
    3. Even SIMPLER than the civilian county and,
    4. Servicing.

The servicing bit is important as there are obviously many Countys that are immaculately serviced, but many of them arent, and given their age, many are actually pretty beat up and rusty.

ADF vehicles get hammered thats for sure. But they also get serviced and repaired with no expense spared. Until recently anyway. Given that the fleet is now being sold off servicing and repairs are heavily prioritised. So in the last few tranches of fleet auctions I suspect we will see a lot of vehicles that are knackered.

Im not totally wed to the idea of either a county or a Perentie either way. There was just a particular perentie came up as an opportunity.

I dunno if that makes sense, but there you go.

Im certainly not in this for the 'hero factor' whatever that is, and I am by no means a military vehicle enthusiast. I just want a hard-as-nails 110 with a bullet proof engine and driveline that is nice and simple to service, cheap to run, and has the flexibility for me to go to town fitting long travel suspension, 35"s, etc and take it off road in remote places.

(my 130 does that at the moment, but I am a little it over having to second-guess faults and chase gremlins around in the wiring loom)

Send me the details to this County Im pretty keen to see it now, I'll have a look at anything.

Thanks for your replies though Im learning more and more.
