    running out of puff

took the red rattler for a 15klm run today to shake it down and clear the cobwebs.

at the 10klm mark it started hunting and died in the ****..

pulled over as far as i could and started looking for reasons...

none obvious so decided to check the sludge filter

drained and couldnt see anything amiss at all

main filer has only done 2 hours work and fuel appears clean so i doubt it would be that surely...

primed the system up again with the hand pump (which leaked so needs fixing) fired it up and managed to nurse it the 5klm home.

it has been sitting a while but i was running it for 15-20mins each week..

i thought maybe sucking air from somewhere or maybe cap not venting but couldnt really find any evidence of either....

    any suggestions ?

unscrew the cap a couple of turns and try again...

if it still dies try changing the strainer in the bottom of the lift pump and yes if your lift pump is leaking while your pumping it it can allow air to be sucked in while its running.

to check for that crack the bleeder on the FIP or the filter and if it never stops spitting bubbles its usually the pump OR the oring on the sedimentor leaking.

Thats the thimble type condom type of thingymijig isn''t it? or am I thinking of something else?

Inc, might be worth while chucking a fuel additive to it as well, if it was anything like my fuel system it will be full of diesel snot, since the cleaning stuff went in I have been getting around another 100km's per tank.

no, its nothing like a condom....

its supposed to have holes in it to let fluid flow through.

unless youve been a lot better with your maintenance than Im willing to believe you have been or youve had your kids swinging the spanners you wont have gotten that particular filter out..... the engine mount is usually in the way.

and no dobbo having to change the oil in a component because youve replaced it after killing it while "playing" does not count as maintenance.

If it goes ten kays, then I'd guess the problem is more likely at the tank end than at the engine end.

You did not say if you got air out when you primed it on the ide of road, hunting sounds like fuel but on the off chance, you have not left a rag in the intake /aircleaner? ( have seen it before, more than once)

One time saw a Cummins in a drill rig go from 2100 RPM to 0 in one turn. Denim in the supercharger - broke the rotors and split the case. Put rag in back of AC housing to blow out dust, forgot to remove before putting element back in.

Yes I have been, all fluids and filters in the car were changed less than a fortnight ago. This included the cleaning of a mesh thimble sort of object funnily enough shaped like a Blknight that unscrews inbetween the engine mount and the bottom of the injector pump.
***** of a job getting it out ,F**k at one stage even my hands were dirty, it was from touching currency though.

Yes and no, I admit it is not preventative maintenance, but wouldn't your life be dull if all you did was preventative maintenance and no repairs.

Ray, I had to replace a s/c on one of these, (190 HP 24valve motor?) due to the plastic intake hose melting and sucking itself into the supercharger, then setting solid as it cooled
Stopped the engine and split the supercharger case.

    Not a pleasant job.

Dont know what part your talking about dobbo.... Ive been through the Raves, the Series, stage and deefer workshop manuals, 3 different versions of the RPS, 2 dead tree versions of the EMEI's and an electronic copy...

I cant find a filter thats shaped like a greek god anywhere.
