Thread: Torque Impulse

We have more to think about now, I'll do a bit more research on the bits needed, won't start pulling "Fergie" apart till next Winter, getting too close to Christmas to start now, things are starting to get busy with work.

So, is it really worth the extra time/expense changing over from the LT95 4speed we already have to a 5speed Suzie box?

That is going to come down to what rpm you are spending most time in with the LT95, and how much will you benefit from the overdrive of 5th.

You asked about noise levels before. Do you have significant noise from the LT95, or is it the noise from the Isuzu you want to reduce.

The motor noise is probably the main concern of my wife, I'm a bit deaf anyway, I wasn't sure if the noise of the motor dropped when you go 5th gear doing Freeway work.

As often as possible we shall be towing our boat, about 2 ton loaded.

If it's mainly/just engine noise you're concerned about have you done just about all you can in regards to sound proofing/insulation? Having been in about half a dozen different Isuzu County's with differing states of sound proofing, I can tell you that in a properly sound proofed one you should be able to have a conversation without raising your voice. Rijidij's is a top example, using good quality material.

Underside of bonnet & underside of transmission tunnel are important areas, as is engine side of firewall. Yeah I know, that's (virtually) all the engine bay! Footwells & trans tunnel with rubber then carpet will top it off. Cheaper & easier than a geabox mod.

Almost three years ago I went from a 1.22:1 T-case to a 1.003:1. That dropped my cruising rpm from 2500 to around 2000 rpm. Big difference in NVH accompianed that.

I'm all for sound insulation too. No reason not to have both.

We have the standard 88 Rangie under bonnet insulation, nothing engine side of the firewall and transmission tunnel, inside the vehicle is the standard 88 Rangie rubber, original carpet and the new carpet over the lot.

What is a good insulation/soundproofing to use?

We can carry out conversations, they might be a bit louder than normal, sSorting out the soundproofing is a good start.

There is a big reduction in engine noise when I change from 4th-5th in my 110 (LT85). I don't know if I could live with an LT95 for long highway trips - especially with the added noise from the whiney gearbox!!!

While Rijidij's conversion is unbelievably neat and tidy, that stuff on the underneath of the bonnet doesn't do anything to reduce noise. To stop the transmission of noise you need MASS (or more correctly density), that stuff from clark rubber is just a lightweight foam with foil on one side.

I installed the same stuff as Rijidij (mainly for looks). It made very little difference to noise - might have stopped the bonnet panels vibrating a bit.

I went to clark rubber for soundproofing, and they kept trying to sell me light foam. They thought I was strange when I ended up buying 5mm heavy rubber. I bonded that stuff all over the engine side of the firewall and it has made a big difference.

If you don't believe me, ask Offender90 - he is an acoustic engineer, and has plans to use barium loaded vinyl or some similar super dooper commercial noise insulation for his 120.

So - the bottom line - if it isn't heavy/dense it won't work.
