How can i tell if its a lt77 gearbox? Is there some sort of markings on it somewhere? And if we go for an lt95 conversion will it fit up to the transfer case?

The LT77 is cast iron main case, with ally extension housing. if it is the original rangie box it will be an LT77. The LT95 has a combined transfer and main case, it is all in one piece. The LT95 4spd with 1:1 high range would be my choice.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

Its very small physically, haha, if its factory box, it'll be LT77

The LT95 has an integral Tx so must use it, can't utelise the LT230

    From Ashcrofts web page :

    Identifying your Unit
There are three types of 5 speed mainbox, LT77, R380 and LT85 (Santana). The following questions will help identify which type of box you have.
    1) Is reverse underneath 5th gear on the gear knob?
If yes, you have an R380 . Please go to point (a) to identify which type.
If no go to question 2.
    2) Is reverse gear next to 1st gear?
You either have an LT77 or LT85. Question 3 will identify which one.
    3) Is the maincasting black or aluminium?
If black you have an LT77, please go to point (a) to identify which type.
If aluminium, you have a LT85, Santana box. Please go to point (b) to identify which type.
    (a) The gearbox number will be stamped or dot punched on the oval machined flat directly below the filler level plug, on the right hand side of the gearbox main casing. The relevant numbers we require are the first two and the last letter, i.e. the number may be 56A1234567G, we would call this a 56G. Click here to see a video of where to find this number. In some cases it may not be possible to read this number in which case we will need precise details about the type of vehicle you have, engine fitted and year to help us identify it.
    (b) The sides of the aluminium housing will either be smooth, which will be a 20C, Solid Case, or cross hatched, which will be a 22C, Split Case

A V8, LT95 or LT85 wont bolt up to an Isuzu 4BD1. Land Rover changed the bellhousing on these gearboxes when they used the Isuzu 4BD1.

They also changed the flywheel housing on the 4BD1 and use a different bolt pattern (to Isuzu) for the bellhousing. An LT95 or LT85 with an Isuzu bellhousing will only bolt up to the Land Rover 4BD1 flywheel housing.

I just want to thank you fellas for the great advice. Thank you for taking your time to help me. Much appreciated! I had a look and sure enough by the sounds of it we've got the 77 box. The old man has a new latest idea of putting the "rodeo" or "D-Max" engine in it now. So who knows? I'll keep you posted.........!

That would make a very nice conversion. The wiring will take some sorting out, but mechanically I think the 4JB1T kits available in the UK will provide most of what you need to physically fit the motor.

I heard around the grapevine that there is a way of taking a 5-speed gearbox and somehow cutting the front lip and redrilling the Isuzu bolt pattern into the bellhousing, the guy I was talking to meet a fellow enthusiast who had it done somewhere for his conversion but alas didn't get his contact details, the only description I got is it was and Isuzu powered white Rangie with really big tyres.

Anyone got any info, thoughts or ideas on this one?

    Glenn
