And the other thing as that you don't really gain much.
The output on the five speed and four speed in top gear would be similar, my mate has hte five speed it doesn't as well the gears are smaller and you have to change gears more.
Your mate might be using a Disco LT230 transfer case. The lt95 is 3.52:1 in 4th the lt85 3.55:1 in 4th & 2.82:1 in 5th ( in an Isuzu) If we are going the get off topic lets be accurate

Thanks Bearman and DeeJay. I never liked the spacer arrangement between the flange and the brake drum, that was the mechanics initial 'fix' but we have that sorted now. So it sounds like the output shaft I'm curently running may be worn since the one sitting in the glove box does look brand new. Looks like I need to spend another afternoon on my back under the old dear!

I'll let you know how it goes and post a few pics. Wont be for a week or so.

ok guys i am getting a bit confused here.

the out put flange, Is the bit at the back of the Trasfercase that is retained by one nylock boult that fits on a spline and is inside the oil seal.

am i correct in thinking that it is this bit that is shorter in a RR than a county?

Yes, its shorter in a Rangie which, if fitted with a County handbrake will pull the hanbrake drum on to its backing plate. Using spacers to get it away is going to put too much strain on the 4 driveshaft flange bolts.

If the spacers are wide enough and the bolts tight, then the bolts won't know or care that there's a spacer in there.
Torque is taken by the spacer and flanges, the bolts are just there to hold them together tight enough to not move.
