My starter is similar layout, but probably a different brand. Individual details differ.

You're putting the transfer a lot further rearward than necessary. Custom driveshafts with this one? How much headroom do you need for the gear linkage?

    Dougal,

How was the clearance compared to the pics for you starter?

Unless I have measured something wrong, the transfer case will be in the same place as where it would be with a LT85

Going to be tight for headroom... won't know until I fit it.....

My starter is lower because I have the Isuzu truck bellhousing. The landrover item mounts the starter higher and avoids notching the chassis rail.

I have 750mm from the back of the engine block to the LT230 mounting face.

Mines a truck housing with a 2 bolt (12 volt) starter motor. In order to clear the chassis rail I rotated the starter and welded studs (cut down bolts) into the housing. The sprocket runs true and looks the part - I really didn't want to notch the rail.

    Just an option to consider....

Also, I had a shaft similar machined up but am working on a plan 'b' to have a drive flange machined to mate the Isuzu output flange and a double ended splined shaft - one end 24spline the other 10spline.

That pic is with the Isuzu Truck Flywheel cover and lower starter motor position, I pulled the landrover one out and have it on the shed floor.

    I have 655mm for LT85 (with bellhousing) plus 80mm for flywheel cover = 735mm
    Isuzu MSA 450mm, Isuzu flywheel cover 105mm = 555mm
    Adaptor Housing is 180mm

    /snip/

Hmmm interesting. The Truck housing I have is what is seen in the pic. 2 Bolt, 24V. Bolted straight in/no rotating.

    Matt,

How does you clearance compare to the pics?

Ring, Housing and shaft all done.

Not quite 100% happy with the side shift for the main box so been putting off fitting it all. Trying to get a good balance between clearance, smoothness, simplicity and reliability. Looks like it's going to be a hydraulic side shift.

I have a truck engine and 2 bolt, 24V starter that came with the engine. The starter is nothing like yours because it has an offset gear reduction - the motor offset causes the interference with the chassis rail.

I have given consideration to rotating the starter but would probably weld the aluminium flange on the starter before (as Matt has done) welding/brazing studs to the cast iron flywheel housing.

I would be interested to know what starter you have, as it could save me cutting my new (to me) chassis. Hmm, maybe the landie isuzu has a different tooth pitch on the ring gear and pinion may be incompatible

Edit: BTW, I meant to add compliments for your work on the adaptors
