Also from looking in the holes in the back at "2 o'clock and 9 o'clock, i can see the last gear easily, i am sure oil migrates from these holes otherwise the speedo drive would have destroyed itself
I did wonder about lub for the speedo worm, so having splash come through the 9 & 2 holes makes sense.
Sounds like oil is getting to the splines somehow, despite the whole assembly being bolted together tightly.
So are people as a rule not going to cross drill the spud? Would it hurt and give extra assurance? In other words should it be part of any future production?
Installed with thru bolt.

Is the bolt torqued against the worm gear or the nose of the gearbox output shaft?
And the hole at the end is cross drilling for lube? And a 2nd, opposite but unseen in the photo?
Don't think that is drilled, think its just a mark.
Standard flange isn't drilled, don't see that this needs doing either
