There's at least 10mm clearance from the rail and when drilling the housing and welding two studs to rotate the starter, I just took my time to minimise the heat 'pulling' the stud off centre.

Anyway, it sure beat notching the chassis....

Yep, there you go, starter can be rotated.

Hey Mudmouse, Is that the two tabs for the clutch slave cylinder I see in your picture?

    Thanks for that Rijidij,

Did she have a label? Which box do you have?

And do you know what ratio the overdrive unit is?

I couldn't find a label or castings on that side of the box. It looks like it's been painted a couple of times so the labels either under there somewhere (but I don't think so) or it's missing.
I'll have to do some counting when I pull the box out one day.

G'day. Yup - this box has the option of mounting the slave on either side although, with that engine and the position of the starter, it can only be fitted on the drivers side. Both an Isuzu slave and the original (V8) slave fit - the LR slave just needs a bit of material shaved off one side to line the mounting holes up..

By the way if anyone is interested...my starter is part No. ERHS-2405 - i think it's Nippon-Denso - supplied by Metcalf Group Pty Ltd in Carole Park QLD (07-3271 2700).

Have you got the Disco on the road? The original LT85 (LT95/Isuzu/V8) slave cylinder bolts straight up on the MSA box. The Isuzu slave had a 30mm bore (from memory) and didn't travel far enough with the 110 master cylinder. The LT85 with a 25mm bore works perfectly.

No mate, there's been quite a few delays and interruptions...

I've got both the LR V8 and Isuzu slave and have had dramas with both - just aren't getting full travel on the fork. Since I took the body off (for the third time) I haven't worried about the clutch - I've chopped off the rear cross member and fabbed up a (rear) winch bar/swing away carrier.

I'm waiting for a shaft (box/transfer) to get machined before I get stuck back into it....been nearly three years, so what's the rush

The defender 200/300tdi slave is 22mm which might give you a bit more.

Yeah no rush hey, the longer things take the longer you can think about putting more stuff on before it is all finished.....

    Lt230 Transfer

The other day the Lt230 in my 130 Defender suddenly started making noise when off the throttle. I thought it was a uni because it was a knocking noise at just that sort of frequency, but on further inspection, the uni's were fine......

I have a reason for posting this here, so please bare with me.

..... After shifting into low range the frequency of the knocking was about doubled, so it was a transfer case problem of some sort.
Draining the oil didn't reveal any obvious metal shavings etc and the only visible damage with the main inspection plate removed is one tooth on an intermediate gear appears to have been squashed at one end (see pic below) There is no corresponding damage on the other gear it mates with. I haven't investigated any further at this stage.

Anyway, my reason for posting here is, I'm not too familiar with the Lt230 and I'm wondering if they are known for any particular weakness, thus making the transfer case the weak link in between the Isuzu box and a Sals diff. I'm lead to believe the Lt230 is generally a strong, reliable box, so is my problem just a case of bad luck, or something that could be somewhat expected of a Lt230.

I like the thought of eventually fitting my Isuzu gear box, so I just thought I'd question the transfer box strength and reliability.

    Cheers, Murray

My understanding is that the LT230's are one of the strongest factory transfer cases available....
